  • Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston

by Priti Sharma Thirteenth - Century Angkor Was Home To More People Than Modern Boston 18 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement The Southeast Asian city of Angkor, famous for the Angkor Wat temple, had between 700,000 and 900,000 residents in the 13th century. With this number, Angkor becomes one of the biggest cities before the modern era. It's also comparable in size to many modern cities; Boston, for example, had around 693,000 residents in 2019. The city’s remains, currently in northwest Cambodia, are well-known for their stone temples, structures, and infrastructure. With the use of scanning technology, archaeologists could spot the remains of buildings made of wood and less resilient materials outside Angkor's "downtown" region. They have vanished without a trace since the majority of their structures were built of wood, thatch, and bamboo. The remnants of Yasodharapura's walls, reservoirs, roadways, and, most importantly, its religious structures—which were constructed of stone and laterite to worship the Buddha or a pantheon of Indian gods—are how we learned about this city that was abandoned in the sixteenth century. When Angkor Wat was first constructed, Suryavarman II was a strong ruler who used it as both a mausoleum and a monument. Over a square mile is devoted to the Vishnu shrine. The Ramayana, an Indian epic, as well as incidents from Suryavarman's life are shown in the base relief's exquisite carving. They also display the god of the underworld, Yama, sending people to heaven or to hell. A sophisticated culture, "Angkor" had its rulers at the top of the social hierarchy. The majority of those who constructed the temples and produced sustenance for the aristocracy were rice farmers, and they employed methods that have largely remained unchanged to the current day. The Khmer people were skilled carpenters and gifted stone and wood carvers. Impressive reservoirs and razor-sharp roadways connecting Cambodian cities were built by Khmer engineers, and many of the temples still bear intricate inscriptions that were written by Khmer poets. Warriors from Cambodia assaulted nearby kingdoms and guarded Yasodharapura against invasion. Many of these "ordinary" contributions are overlooked when we visit the temples or see the ethereal traditional dance of Cambodia. After Jayavarman's demise, Yasodharapura continued to be a magnificent and rich city for at least two hundred years. Following a Thai army assault in 1431, it was mostly abandoned. Soon after, the center of government in Cambodia moved to the south. A Cambodian monarch visited the old city in the 1500s, repaired a few temples, and presumably spent some time living in Yasodharapura. Angkor Wat was often visited by pilgrims, and a Buddhist monastery stood next to the temple for many years. However, Yasodharapura was abandoned by the outside world, and the jungle gradually took it over. The amazingly creative and engineering prowess that the ruins show makes up for its "heritage." In addition to the open-minded, resourceful, and tough people who struggle to make ends meet in their impoverished, congested country while keeping testimony to their magnificent heritage, these abilities are on display today in Cambodian classical dance. A tropical metropolis, Angkor endured centuries of political and climatic unpredictability. Urban planners may be able to better grasp some of the limitations that an increasing number of the world's cities confront by tracking the phenomenon's development and tipping point. • Into The Enticing and Harmful World of Fast Fashion

by Rupashree Ravi Into The Enticing and Harmful World of Fast Fashion 13 August 2022 FASHION Advertisement What comes to your mind when someone says trendy, fashionable, and affordable? Of course, big brands like H&M, Zara, Forever 21, and Shein, which are widely popular and are known for their cheap and fashionable clothing. These are clothing giants that entice their loyal customer base with sales and exciting offers, and you cannot say no to them. But the cost of making these clothes comes at a heavy price. These brands are the biggest players in the fashion industry and are also among the most damaging industries for the environment. They are fast fashion retailers who bring out large quantities of a variety of products and allow consumers to get more fashion and product differentiation at a very low price. Stores like Zara, Forever 21 and H&M are the pioneers of fast fashion in the 21st century ‘Fast fashion’ is cheaply manufactured and low priced garments that copy the latest catwalk styles and get quick entry into retail stores in order to maximise on the current fashion trends. It is called the fast fashion model because it involves rapid design, mass production, and distribution as well as heavy marketing. Today, it takes less than fifteen days for a garment to move from the design stage to being sold physically in stores. The term has gained more prominence in recent times and is often used in conversations revolving around environmental consciousness as well as sustainability. This is extremely worrisome because the fashion industry, especially since the rise of fast fashion, has become the second largest consumer of water and is responsible for 10 per cent of carbon emissions and 20 per cent of wastewater globally. It also dries up water sources and pollutes waterways. This is because these fast fashion retailers use about 700 gallons of water to make one cotton shirt and about 2,000 gallons to make one pair of jeans. Moreover, the textile dyes that they use contribute to polluting these waterways as the chemicals leak into the water, which also poses health risks to the general population. Fast fashion has been growing at an unsustainable rate These brands also use synthetic fibres like polyester, nylon and acrylic which take several years to biodegrade. The fast fashion model is also an energy-intensive process. Even cotton is not an environment-friendly fabric to manufacture for fast fashion companies as they are exposed to a number of pesticides that are very harmful. So, what’s the solution? The alternative to fast fashion is sustainable fashion or eco-fashion. To counter the environmental damage caused by fast fashion, sustainable fabrics like wild silk, organic cotton, hemp, linen, and lyocell can be used in a responsible manner. We can certainly choose to shop in a more sustainable way, but getting involved with sustainable fashion does not necessarily require buying anything new. Sustainable fashion aims to be conscious and ethical Sustainable fashion brands like Brogger, Insom, Ka-Sha focus on bringing out cruelty-free products. They use fewer resources wherever possible to reduce impact and conserve water by using organic mills and ozone technology in its production to benefit people, plants, and animals. Some of these brands also give away their profits to charitable causes. Even vegan leather has become very popular in recent times. Local Indie fashion brands are becoming popular It is essential that we as consumers stop buying from these fast fashion companies and instead choose locally produced garments. Try opting for local Indian brands like Udd Stories or Anokhi that are made by indigenous communities. #FastFashion #SustainableFashion #EcoFashion #VocalForLocal #OOTD SEARCH The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom FASHION Fashion In The 19th Century FASHION Colour Psychology in Fashion: Explained FASHION The Influence Of Kanye West On Fashion FASHION K-Pop Fashion And Its Impact On Global Wardrobe FASHION POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Dubai Fashion Week Day Five: Emerging Talents, Cultural Heritage, And Global Fashion Dialogues 14 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Marina Ignjat: A Journey Through Style And Travel 13 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Anaya Collection Unveils "Gaudí’s Reverie" At Dubai Fashion Week: A Fusion Of Love, Technique, And Playful Elegance 11 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Hebajasmi Unveils Captivating New Collection For SS25: A Masterpiece Of Art And Fashion 10 September 2024 FASHION RELATED POSTS

  • Blood Falls In Antarctica: Explained

by Aishwarya Blood Falls In Antarctica: Explained 11 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement You might have heard about waterfalls, but have you heard about blood falls? Yes, as creepy and scary as it sounds, blood falls isn’t blood falling from a cliff. Blood falls is situated in Antarctica, the ice-covered continent of the earth. While many researchers are keen on researching and preventing this ice-covered continent, some of them found out that this blood-red colour waterfall has no explanation for its colour. Antarctica is the coldest place on the planet, and the average annual temperature around the Blood Falls is around -17 degrees. This area is located within Victoria Land, west of McMurdo Sound. Now, you might be thinking if we can visit Blood Falls. Well, to answer that, Atlas Obscura has said that Blood Falls can only be reached by helicopter from the McMurdo Station (U.S.). The colour of the Blood Falls was initially identified as red algae . Now, a study in the Journal of Glaciology has revealed the true origin of Blood Falls with the help of radar to scan the layers of ice from which the river pours. The deep red fall was discovered in the year 1911 when scientists noticed a river that stained the surrounding cliff of ice with a dark red colour. Though the theory behind the red colour was believed to be the effect of algae, thanks to research by the University of Alaska Fairbanks , which revealed the true origin of Blood Falls. The study boils down to describing the red colour of the oxidized iron in brine saltwater, the same process that gives the iron a dark red colour when it rusts. The research team obtained the glacier using radio-echo sounding to map out the features below the glacier. The super-saturated brine that makes up the river allows the stark density contrast in RES compared to non-saline ice. The research team also calculated that the water approximately takes 1.5 million years to finally reach Blood Falls as it makes its way through fissures and channels in the glacier. You might think that the water would be frozen in place as it sits below a thick layer of ice. However, many aspects allow the water to remain liquid. One of the many aspects is the release of latent heat associated with water freezing, this low amount of heat contributes to keeping the water as a liquid. Furthermore, the water super-saturated with salt freezes at a lower temperature than fresh water. Another interesting fact is that Blood Falls also contains microbes that can survive in extreme conditions. These microbial communities can live with sulfates in the water. They provide hints on how life could have developed on other plants that lack oxygen. The Blood Falls in Antartica is no less than a miracle. It is full of new discoveries and mysteries. We need to be more careful with our environment, as there are more such amazing things to discover, before destroying them. The colour of the Blood Falls was initially identified as red algae . • Dear Earth

by Anushka Singh Dear Earth 1 October 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Dear Earth, I hope you’re doing fine. It has been an extended time since we last talked. To be honest, I feel wordless. It’s one of those dilemmas where we have got an entire ocean of thoughts inside us but we feel clueless of how to let it flow. We’ve been here before for countless times, the crisis chats, arguments, disputes, tears, promises and plenty more. But now, it’s different. Now I understand why they say: “It’s not you, it’s me.” I loved you from the instant I became capable of even understanding words like these. I saw your unequaled beauty, your tenderness and warmth, your soothing and diligently devoting nature. Although you never reacted to my ceaseless vents, you continued to make me feel the solace around you that I felt nowhere else. And, I am thankful. You have always been there, making me feel the very fact that I am not alone, through your littlest of efforts. Nightly, when I’ve spent hours watching the sky trying not to feel sad, you made me feel your presence. Every sundown, after I sat on the waterfront admiring your charm, the wind kissed my cheeks. I do know it surely was you, notifying that you love me back. I muse on all the content times we humans explored your magnificent mountains and endless seas; after we lazed in your sun, pacified by your pleasing breeze. I always hoped for these precious moments which are so near my heart, to never end. Over the years, I have tried to carry out my part of promises. I assumed multiple times, why do you even need me or people to talk on your behalf if you are the one to create us in the first place. I wasn’t sure if it was just another trick of yours to make people act or you were just terrified of something. I feel apologetic to admit, I didn’t even ask you. You were and you have always been my ally, my best friend and I like a stupid, just assumed that I knew what was best. I guess that is the point, isn’t it? You kept trying to speak. To me, to people, to the universe. We just took it light enough for you to destroy yourself. But today, I accept. It isn’t you, it’s me; it’s us. The reason i’m writing this letter is because I have realised something. It’s not you who needs the saving, it’s me. It’s me and us, the humans. We humans, who try to become the hero for you, forgot that you don’t actually need one. In those magnificent mountains and endless seas, lies the flair for us to nourish, clothe and foster ourselves, without limit. Your warm sun and pleasing breeze can give us the energy to learn, work and prosper over a lifetime. You’ve always been there helping us literally survive and live. You have been there in every way that you could but when came our turn, we backed off. We became selfish as we are. Dear earth, here I am. Here I am, apologizing on behalf of the whole civilization and human race, for destroying all that you gave us with all of your love. I am sorry, for the things that i could not stop and the things i am unable to change anymore. Please know, all of me loves all of you regardless of anything. It’s just that you won the game of proving yourself and I failed. Yours truly, Someone who is really sorry. • The Very Naked Case Of John Cena

By Anushka Sharma The Very Naked Case Of John Cena 13 March 2024 FASHION Advertisement The glitz, the glamor, and yes, the unexpected nudity—welcome to the wild world of the Oscars ! Let's dive into the sensational saga of John Cena's bare-it-all moment at the 96th Annual Academy Awards in 2024 and how it echoes the infamous streaking incident from 1974. Picture this: Hollywood's finest gather to celebrate the crème de la crème of cinema at the Oscars. But amidst the star-studded affair, there's one man who decides to steal the spotlight in the most daring way possible—none other than wrestling legend turned actor, John Cena. Now, Cena wasn't up for any awards that night, but he sure made his mark. Strutting onto the stage alongside host Jimmy Kimmel, Cena left jaws dropping and tongues wagging as he stood there, completely in the buff. It was a bold move, to say the least, but Cena wasn't about to let a little thing like clothes get in the way of making a statement. So, what prompted this risqué display? Well, Kimmel, ever the mischief-maker, harked back to a legendary moment in Oscars history—the streaking incident of 1974. Back then, a fellow by the name of Robert Opel caused quite the stir by dashing across the stage in his birthday suit. And Kimmel, always one for a good laugh, thought it would be hilarious to recreate that moment with Cena. But Cena wasn't having it. With a twinkle in his eye and a hint of mischief, he declared, "The male body is not a joke." It was a powerful statement, reminding us all that there's more to nudity than just shock value. And with that, Cena took his place on stage, ready to present the award for Best Costume Design. Of course, presenting an award at the Oscars is no easy feat, especially when you're doing it in the buff. Cena struggled to open the winner's envelope, his lack of clothing proving to be more of a hindrance than a help. But hey, that's showbiz for you! Meanwhile, let's rewind the clock to 1974, the year of the original Oscars streaker, Robert Opel. As host David Niven attempted to introduce Elizabeth Taylor, Opel made his grand entrance, streaking across the stage with reckless abandon. It was a moment of pure chaos and hilarity, with Niven quick to quip, "Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?" Opel's motives were unclear—some say he was advocating for body positivity, while others claim he simply wanted his fifteen minutes of fame. But regardless of his intentions, Opel's streaking stunt left an indelible mark on Oscars history, setting the stage for future moments of unexpected hilarity. Back in 2024, Cena's bare-it-all moment may not have been as spontaneous as Opel's, but it was certainly no less entertaining. As he stood there, stark naked, presenting an award at the most prestigious event in Hollywood, Cena reminded us all that sometimes, you've just got to strip away the pretense and embrace the absurdity of it all. So, whether you're a wrestling fan, a movie buff, or just someone who enjoys a good laugh, Cena's naked Oscars moment is sure to go down in history as one of the most memorable—and hilarious—moments in Oscars history. • The Rise Of Nisha Ahuja: Balancing Passion And Profession

By Anushka Sharma The Rise Of Nisha Ahuja: Balancing Passion And Profession 14 August 2024 FASHION Advertisement In the ever-evolving landscape of content creation, Nisha Ahuja is emerging as a standout figure whose journey is as inspiring as it is remarkable. Combining a deep-rooted passion for fashion with a methodical approach to content creation, Nisha's ascent to prominence reflects both dedication and strategic foresight. Nisha’s journey began with a simple but profound love for fashion. "I always had a passion for fashion and creating content," she shares. Her venture into the world of content creation was spontaneous yet purposeful. "One day, I just started making Reels. The whole motive was just about my passion for fashion ," she reflects, highlighting the organic nature of her beginnings. A significant breakthrough came just a month into her content creation journey when she secured a contract with Myntra, a leading fashion e-commerce platform. "Myntra actually signed a contract with me for a year," Nisha recounts. This pivotal moment transformed her from an enthusiastic creator posting casually to a structured influencer with a well-planned content calendar. Despite the glamour of brand collaborations, Nisha remains grounded, attributing her success to her genuine enjoyment of the content creation process. "I really loved and enjoyed the process. That’s why I’m still continuing my 9 to 5 and content creation," she explains. Her ability to juggle a stable job with her creative pursuits is a testament to her dedication and exceptional time management skills. Nisha’s insights into the evolving dynamics of content creation offer valuable lessons for aspiring influencers . She sheds light on the barter deals that often characterize early stages in the industry. "They used to give me a voucher of 10k to shop and create content. It wasn’t money, but for fashion people, clothes were a big deal," she notes. However, as creators build their communities and prove their value, she emphasizes the importance of transitioning to fair compensation. "Once you’ve built a community and can provide brands with value, creators deserve to be paid. Nothing comes for free." Balancing a corporate career with content creation is no small feat, and Nisha's approach is both practical and inspiring. "If you have responsibilities and need stable income, a job is essential. But if you're passionate, you should explore content creation as a career option," she advises. Her ability to excel in both realms underscores her organizational prowess and passion for her work. The content creation industry is rife with opportunities, and Nisha is optimistic about its future. She encourages greater inclusivity, noting, "There are a lot of opportunities for everyone," and urges more men to explore this field. Yet, she also cautions against the pitfalls of relying solely on barter collaborations, advocating for a shift towards paid engagements as creators gain experience. Nisha's success is highlighted by a viral reel that amassed 16 million views, a testament to her relatable and engaging content. "It’s a lovely feeling, but it attracts a lot of attention, not all of it positive. Still, the recognition from brands is invaluable," she reflects, demonstrating her resilience amidst the challenges of fame. In addition to fashion, Nisha delves into lifestyle and food content, showcasing her versatility and creative spirit. Her talent for transforming thrifted pieces into fashionable outfits resonates with her audience, reflecting her ability to push creative boundaries. Inspired by creators like Komal Pandey, Nisha continues to experiment and innovate within the fashion space. To combat creative burnout, Nisha advocates for regular breaks and reconnecting with nature. "Timely breaks are important. I do yoga and listen to Sadhguru’s videos to recharge myself," she shares. Her approach to maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial in the fast-paced world of social media. As Nisha navigates her engagement and family responsibilities, she appreciates the multifaceted role of managing both personal and professional aspects of life. "It's a task, but I really appreciate girls who are managing families and content creation. It's like your own little business, and you're working 24x7," she says, acknowledging the dedication required to balance these roles. Looking forward, Nisha envisions a future filled with opportunities and accolades. "I want to be seen and appreciated for my content. I see myself working with big brands and designers, doing fashion shows, and receiving awards," she concludes, underscoring her entrepreneurial spirit and relentless drive. Nisha Ahuja’s journey exemplifies how passion, hard work, and resilience can lead to extraordinary success. As the content creation industry continues to evolve, her story serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with dedication and a clear vision.
