  • Breaking Stereotypes About Women and Motorcycles

by Aparajita Jaiswal Breaking Stereotypes About Women and Motorcycles 1 June 2021 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Women shifting gears of their bikes, to shift gears of perspectives of people’s minds! “Life’s not fair; Get used to it”, a renowned quote by Bills Gates and the first rule from his “11 rules you will never learn in school”. Though Bill Gates had quoted these words for everybody in general, women would resonate with the words more effectively than men. Women have been surrounded by and are living in through the innumerable stereotypes since time immemorial. For everyone who is wondering, what a stereotype is, it is an image of how an individual is expected to act based upon factors such as race, nationality, sexual orientation and lot more. From the very beginning, girls come across rigid stereotypes which at times prove to be major barriers on their path of following their heart. The impact of these stereotypes can be bought to light, in two very simple yet thought provoking, statements which are oversimplified and overgeneralized by the society as a whole. “Pink is for girls and blue is for boys”, “Boys don’t cry”, are very common statements. Everyone might have come across one of these two general gender-based stereotypes. What makes everything worse is the fact that, somewhere, each and every person of the society has been, either intentionally or unintentionally been playing a role in building such rigidity. A measure of rigidity is bought to light by the fact that people actually consider that there’s no such thing called stereotyping and usually end up saying “This is how it is meant to be”. One such stereotype being that “motorcycling is not meant for women”. Motorcycling and biking has been always taken as a male oriented niche. Since time immemorable, motorcycling has always been associated with men to pursued as a career, hobby or passion. When talked about “bikers” or “motorcyclists”, the first image that is formed in one’s mind is a strong, masculine figure, wearing helmet and a safety kit and riding a heavy sports bike. Never does the image a woman in the same attire, upon a sports bike occur to people. Moreover, in case of bikers on the racing tracks, women are not even taken in consideration even in the imaginations. For those girls who stand strong and are courageous enough to follow their heart, family restrictions become a barrier. For those who even convince and receive family support, the entire society becomes a major obstacle in their path. Yet as a ray of hope in the midst of this stereotypical hanging rope, there are examples of women who tend to break the stereotypes and follow their passion fighting against all the odds that might cross their path. One such inspiring women is Roshni Misbah. During an interview, she gives us an insight into her journey and how she overcame the set stereotypes to follow her passion and become the only girl in India to own a Ninja H2. “Just because we aren’t allowed to do it, doesn’t mean we can’t do it” Roshni Misbah boldly quotes in favour of all the girls out there who wish to ride. Coming from a family of Islamic scholars and Hafiz’s, and then being a motorcycle enthusiast was odd. Her parents were initially hesitant but she somehow convinced them. The support of her family always which proved to be an ease in the rocky path. Talking about her journey, Roshni mentions that she always received odd looks from people on the road while she rode her bike on the way to college. She specifically mentions the fact that boys usually tried to overtake her, perform some stunts around her and make awkward comments. But nothing could stop her from riding, it was her passion and interest for riding is what kept her going. “As much as we say, we are living in a free world, the fact that there are still places where woman is NOT ALLOWED to do a lot if stuff” she believes. The issue of gender discrimination and stereotypes are very closely interrelated. However, she adds that “I think its all here! In the mind, for you to hold on to and follow your passion.” “You can follow your culture, ethics and yet follow your passion all at a time” she firmly stated. She also puts to light that the stereotypes are just in the mind. Though women today have all the resources and freedom, there is still something that makes their paths so very difficult or becomes a barrier. In most cases its all about the stereotypes and stereotypes are just in the mind. It is the people’s mindset that got to be changed first to bring about the freedom of women in its truest sense. • Coping with Confinement

by Akash Khatri Coping with Confinement 26 July 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement The earlier days of the pandemic caused a furore and great hullabulla. Great chaos everywhere, no school, no maids, work from home and still ambiguous about the situation ahead as we approach towards the end of lockdown four. During this whole topsy turvy journey gradually it seems we have become more human. A transition from a dependant to a more independent working – subtracting the maids and a more gadget-free atmosphere. During this whole transition period, I treasured dormant talent of my personality, as I could steal some time for trying out solo singing, penning down my thoughts to create short stories, experimenting in the kitchen and even nailed the unusual skill of giving men a haircut. Today I had lessons of stitching from my mom-in-law and found that it’s not that tedious and tricky as I had thought, of course, one needs to be lucky to have a good teacher beside you as my MIL is. I tried my hand on tailoring too, thanks to the lockdown. All and all it’s so much fun being indoors with family, doing crazy things and enjoying the nearness, attention as well as helping hand of the spouse. Above all, the level of tolerance has reached its acme and this habit I would always wish could be deep-rooted within me forever. At last, it took a microscopic-organism to make us more human. #LockdownPandemicIndependentConfinement SEARCH Women Empowerment A mere concept or a real Concern SOCIETY Looking Through The Excellence Of ‘Jaali’ Architecture SOCIETY Why the Gender Pay Gap is Wide and Disturbing SOCIETY Festival of Stones SOCIETY The Pygmalion Effect SOCIETY POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Uniting Voices, Shaping Futures: Dive Into Mun 2.0 At NIT Patna 8 September 2024 SOCIETY By Anushka Sharma These Healthy Habits Can Lower Your Risk Of Depression 31 August 2024 SOCIETY By Rini Pathak A Glance In The Kshitij’23: A Euphoric Escapade 26 January 2024 SOCIETY By Rini Pathak Mithibai Kshitij: Epitome Of Diverse Social Cause Empowerment 24 January 2024 SOCIETY RELATED POSTS

  • Re-Discover The Charm Of Old-School Travel With A Total Digital Detox!

by Yashi Srivastava Re-Discover The Charm Of Old-School Travel With A Total Digital Detox! 21 February 2023 TRAVEL Advertisement Advertisement What is that one thing we can’t go a day without? No prizes for guessing; it’s the internet! We can’t get enough of this world of the digital vortex. Thus, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that we have become captive of internet technology to the point where we need a digital detox from time to time or let it take the better of us. Let’s accept that traditional ways of paying bills, playing games (we mean outdoors), calling people, clicking photographs, etc., are so old school! While we cannot go back to standing in lines for hours to pay the bills, we can certainly apply some old-school charm to our travels. Back in the day, travelers and explorers only had winds or maps to guide them to a new destination – and they hardly ever faltered! So, we at L’utopia, decided to take you back to the good days when nobody knew the word digital and yet traveled far and around the globe! The article will help you understand why a digital travel detox is an absolute necessity in the current world and how to switch to the old-world travel patterns so that the next time you go on a trip, you can re-discover the charm and beauty; of old-school travel! Why Go for a digital detox? When was the last time you unplugged from your cell phone/laptop/social media for 24 hours? If your answer is, ‘I don’t know,’ you, my friend, need a digital detox. Every time we get out of control with the consumption of complex carbohydrates and gain a few extra pounds, we detoxify our bodies. In the same way, we can rely on the old-school ways to give our eyes some rest and break from the digital hullaballoo to get our minds back in their original shape. We believe that the best way to do the same is while wandering in the hills or enjoying a traditional meal with our family in a hotel away from social media and its charm - that’s when you enjoy your freedom! A vacation or a trip to your favorite destination without the stress of keeping up with social media or receiving urgent calls will make your trip worthwhile when you avoid tapping on your phone’s screen for no reason. It saves your time and energy. Ah! You’ve no idea how amazing this feeling is, and the result is extraordinary - unfiltered freedom! How to Begin with the digital detox? You can always start with limiting your use of social media – start with an hour or so and bring it down to 20 minutes a day or however it deems fit. Cut down the time of using social media with each passing day. Before setting off for your retreat, ensure you have sent all the important emails and messages and informed your friends and colleagues about the same. Also, you can provide a contact number of the hotel you’ll be staying in so that you can be contacted in case there’s an urgency. Next, you can start wearing a watch on your way out so that you break the habit of looking at your phone. Before leaving for the airport or station: Book your hotel. Get your reservations. Write down the hotel’s address. Ask the staff how to reach the hotel from the airport/station. Finally, make your travel itinerary and jot down the necessary details about the place you’re visiting so that it becomes easy for you to enjoy your time off without stressing over issues regarding where to go and how to reach there, etc. Even your hotel staff can help you with places to visit during your stay but be sure that the information you have collected is correct. How to switch from digital/online tools to old school club? Now that you’re ready to take your digital detox vacation, here are a few non-digital tools that can replace the digital ones and turn you to transform you into a total traditional traveler! Use printed maps instead of GPS- Remember that GPS will be gone when you say goodbye to your smartphone and laptops. So, try and get yourself a street map to figure out the directions to reach your hotel + other places you want to visit. It isn’t that a big task to find a map. However, trying to learn the direction on the printed maps sure is. So, if the map doesn’t work well for you, it’s better to ask for directions from locals. Payphone instead of cell phone (or borrow a phone) - As fun as it sounds, finding a working payphone in today’s world can be hectic. If you’re going for full detox, better borrow a phone to make a call. If you want to go off-grid, you’ll have to face a little uneasiness on your way, but it will add to your great memories, and trust us when we tell you that it will all be completely worth it! Browse the wilderness instead of the internet - Keep your mind off of sending a text, making a call, updating your status, or anything that involves using your phone or laptop and taking in the fresh air of the wilderness! Pay your attention to exploring a new area and absorb the beauty of lush green forests brimming with tropical trees, rambling waterfalls, infinite wild, usual bazaar scenes, delicious food, and rich culture. Send postcards to your loved ones - We agreed on no cell phones while on the trip, but if you miss your friends and family, send them some beautiful postcards of the city/place you’re vacationing. Just go to the nearby Post Office, get it stamped, and send it. Let travel agents take care of your business - Free yourself from the stress of booking tickets, hotels, getting reservations, etc., and contact a travel agent to do that job for you. Technology has made us self-sufficient to get our bookings done, but since you’re going off the grid, it is advisable to rely on a good travel agent. Take a lot of books with you - Purposelessly tapping your phone screen is a great time-killer. So, when you don’t have it, you would understand that you need to direct your attention toward something else. It is thus, suggested to bring lots of books/magazines to read while you’re on a total digital blackout. If you like e-books, well, you must re-acquaint yourself with that sweet old smell of printed books, and if you are a reader, you might not want to switch back to e-reading again! Try it! Jot down important contacts - Whatever you do, DO NOT forget to write down a few important contact numbers before leaving your home. You’re visiting a new place and plan to stay in a new environment for quite a while. So, you must keep these numbers with you all the time - it’s even better if you memorize them! Also, don’t forget to include the number of the hotel you’ll be staying in. So, keep that cell phone away, close the lid of your laptop, put that camera down and unplug yourself from the digital world! Now, pack your bags and leave for your next travel destination as an authentic explorer, and soon you’ll find a connection far better than the one you share with the internet! You can never see enough of the world with a smartphone that has a working internet connection. So, the next time you visit a new place, remember to keep it away and soak in the present moment. Blob - The beauty of old-world travel cannot be compared to the digital tours and trips. The charm and beauty of using a map to reach your destination brings tremendous joy to the explorer or wanderer - the same cannot be said in the case of a digital vagabond since there is no actual work done on their part to find that cafe, or that hill, or beach and so on. Maybe, it is time to ditch your digital tools and go on your next trip in the good old-fashioned way, and we will show you how! #DigitalDetoxTravel #TravellerWithoutPhone #DigitalDetox #TravelIsLife #NoPhoneTravel #OldSchoolTravel SEARCH 7 Abandoned Cities In India And Abroad That Are Too Beautiful To Be Forgotten TRAVEL Blue Lagoon – Iceland TRAVEL Palm Islands TRAVEL WORLD PEACE DOME TRAVEL Blood Falls In Antarctica: Explained TRAVEL POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Chiang Mai Is So Unrealistically Magical; And Here Is Why 28 June 2024 TRAVEL By Anushka Sharma Lakshadweep Is A Heaven In Disguise And Here Is Why 3 April 2024 TRAVEL By Anushka Sharma If Uzbekistan Isn’t On Your Travel List, Here Is Exactly Why It Should Be 21 March 2024 TRAVEL By Anushka Sharma The Fashion Capitals Of Asia: Exploring Style Beyond Borders 19 March 2024 TRAVEL RELATED POSTS

  • The planet’s number one choice of beverage

by Aparajita Jaiswal The planet’s number one choice of beverage 7 July 2022 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement Is coffee just a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans? A love of all things connected with coffee has brought both large and small companies into the world of coffee production and trading. Coffee culture is constantly changing as coffee drinkers seek new ways to enjoy their favorite beverage. People get together for a cup of coffee and a whole cosmos of conversations. In North America and a lot of western European countries, Starbucks and other coffee chains have dominated the market because they are providing to the customers a complete experience around coffee. Coffee and friends, coffee and work, coffee and snacks and coffee to go! The Irish mix coffee with whiskey and they call it “Irish coffee”. In Italy the espresso and espresso machine were born and made into the favorite whole-day beverage of Italians. In Greece, there is an old fashioned coffee shop for old gentlemen, the “kafenio”, where they drink Greek coffee and exchange political ideas or they play cards and a board game called “tavli”. Also, some countries, like Colombia or Brazil, the whole economy is based in coffee. Although, the majority of coffee is produced in Brazil. It produces 40% of the world’s coffee. Interestingly enough, the word espresso comes from Italian and means “expressed” or “forced out”. Espresso is made by forcing very hot water under high pressure through finely ground, compacted coffee. Wherein, the cappuccino was named after Capuchin friars because its color resembles the Capuchin robe. Contrary to the popular belief, dark roast and light roast coffee actually have a similar amount of caffeine. “Coffee – the favorite drink of the civilized world.” – Thomas Jefferson Historically, the word ‘coffee’ comes from the Arabic word ‘qahwah’ which refers to a type of wine. Before coffee became widely available, the popular breakfast drink was beer. No one knows exactly how or when coffee was discovered, though there are many legends about its origin. It is said that coffee grown worldwide can trace its heritage back centuries to the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau. Legend believes, the goat herder, Kaldi, first discovered the potential of these beloved beans. The story goes that that Kaldi discovered coffee after he noticed that after eating the berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night. Kaldi reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery, who made a drink with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and knowledge of the energising berries began a journey which would bring these beans across the globe. Before people learned how to brew coffee, east African tribes mixed coffee berries with animal fat and consumed it as food. It takes a lot to brew the perfect cup of coffee. Some of the best coffee in the world comes from high-quality beans and unique processing methods. Each of these specialty coffees is known for their distinct flavour and aroma, as well as their high price tag. “Kopi Luwak” is the most expensive coffee in the world. It comes from Indonesia and is made from beans digested from the Asian Palm Civet. In other words, it comes from cat poop. It sells for €350 and up per kilo! Another one of the most expensive coffee in the world is Black Ivory Coffee. It can cost up to $1,100 per kilogram. This coffee is produced from part-digested coffee cherries eaten and defecated by Thai elephants. “Beethoven was such an ardent coffee lover that he’d count 60 beans per cup before making his brew.” Not only can your daily cup of joe help you feel more energised, burn fat and improve physical performance, it may also lower your risk of several conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. In fact, coffee may even boost longevity. A study by the University of Texas has found that men who drank two cups a day were 42 per cent less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction compared to men who didn’t. Studies have shown that drinking coffee may lower your risk of depression. Globally people consume about 2.25 billion cups of coffee every day. Coffee is most effective if you drink it between 9:30 and 11:30 AM. Scientists have now successfully turned ground coffee into bio-diesel, so one day coffee may be fuelling your car. Historical facts about coffee are almost unbelievable but very true like for example coffee was banned in Mecca in 1511 as it was believed to stimulate radical thinking and idleness. In ancient Arab culture, a woman could only divorce her husband if he didn’t like her coffee. Another strange fact is the Guinness World record holder for the “Oldest Cat Ever,” a 38-year-old cat named Crème Puff; drank coffee every morning her whole life. #CoffeeCoffeebeansBrazilEspressoBeverageBrazil SEARCH How was Chocolate Born FOOD Virgin Territory: These non-alcoholic thirst quenchers are mixologist approved FOOD Tasting the sunny side of Christmas: Christmas Cocktails FOOD 5 Destinations You Must Head to Taste Wine in India FOOD Breakfast – Don’t miss! • A Good Woman

by Aarti Singh A Good Woman 29 October 2022 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Over the years, generations even, women have been made to feel like in order to be a ‘good’ woman and desirable they need to be selfless, nurturing, sacrificing, always putting others’ needs ahead of their own. This deep seated yet irrational pedestal of being ‘wife-material’. Women are made to believe that they will be deemed perfect only if they think about the good of others first. This is one of the numerous ways how being more self-centred in choices has been the easiest way to villainise women. So today, when a woman decides that she has had enough of bearing people’s expectations and chooses to live life on her own terms, we don’t take over a second to label her as selfish. As a society, we love to villainise women. It’s our favourite timepass. As soon as we see a woman comfortable in her sexuality, concentrating on herself and not seeking constant validation, it irks our soul and pricks our ears. Generation after generation, we are fed with the framework of being the “ideal” woman. And more so than often this includes being able to cook well, looking after one’s family, being independent but not so independent as to threaten their male contemporaries; managing, juggling everything and being good at it. The list really does not end. And for all that matters, we can’t seem to trace where and when it commenced either. Every villainess you see, every single one of them is portrayed as this head strong woman who has problem trusting people, who is independent, highly educated and in a place of power as of to portray that this is what will happen if we give women power. They are always shown to be alone. Or cheated or abandoned. Why is it the prevalent thought that if a woman is successful and unabashed then she must be hard to love? What is it exactly that makes them hard to love? The fact that they aren’t dependent on someone’s validation? Or is it the fact that they are comfortable in their own selves? So quick question- who set this narrative? And had they ever met an actual living, breathing, strong woman in their life? Because it doesn’t seem like it. One would ask out of sheer curiosity that why are we served this narrative. The answer is simple, really. It is done in order to reinforce the popular idea of how successful, educated and modern women are usually selfish and in the wrong to not think about the population of the whole Earth before making decisions that doesn’t have anything to do with- well the population of the whole Earth. With this obscure message of misconceptions that have been so broadly and falsely advertised, we are not only equating women’s independence with arrogance and modernity with shamelessness, but it also projects highly educated women to be ill-mannered and inconsiderate. Truthfully, there is no woman who wore make up one day and ran away from her home the next, or a woman who got a promotion and decided to divorce her husband, or a woman who earned money and turned into a witch. But there are women who are seen as arrogant and ill- mannered just because they did not let anyone else’s idea of femininity describe them. It's sort of humorous as to how lipstick of a slightly darker shade carries the ability to put a woman on a pedestal, how portraying a woman successful and confident goes hand-in-hand with her being non-religious and how merely a haircut or piercing or tattoo holds the power to pronounce a woman pure or impure. And it’s absolutely hilarious how you can be educated, successful, rich, romantically settled, and doing well in every aspect of life yet still you will be forced to fit into a bogus mould of femininity to be considered a “good” woman. Honestly speaking, it is utterly baseless that society has a set of guidelines so as to judge what a conventional “good woman” looks like. You can’t enclose anyone in an invisible cage and expect them to grow at the same time. So it is about time that those guidelines should be either updated or done away with. Why is it the prevalent thought that if a woman is successful and unabashed then she must be hard to love? • Tasting the sunny side of Christmas: Christmas Cocktails

by Aishwarya Tasting the sunny side of Christmas: Christmas Cocktails 2 November 2022 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement It's that time of the year again! With Christmas just over our heads, you might think of the cocktail options to serve your guest. No Christmas party is complete without the classic cocktails. So, here are some of the classic yet yummy cocktails, you can try this Christmas. We also have some non-alcoholic options for the non-drinkers! Eggnog: It is a creamy, sweet, and classic addition to your cocktails recipes, and can be consumed with or without alcohol. It originates from medieval Britain’s “posset”, a milky drink used to toast. The American colonies adopted this drink in the 1700s, using rum as the alcoholic base. Since milk and egg were available widely, it was an affordable drink option to go with. Well, why does it have this weird name? It is said to have derived from the word “noggin”, which was a wooden cup, and “grog”, a strong beer. Hot Buttered Rum: It is tracked back to Europe in the 1600s when sailors consumed hot and spicy drinks to fight off the cold weather. Then England captured Jamaica in 1655 when rum became a much-preferred option than brandy. The Hot Buttered Rum consists of alcohol, sugar or honey, boiling water, spices, and a thick layer of butter. Sounds weird, but you should give it a try for sure! Candy Cane Martini: This drink is a mix of all the best flavours and colours that are appropriate for the season. Candy Cane Martini is a mix of vanilla vodka, creme de cacao, and peppermint schnapps topped with a candy cane. It looks and tastes, just like the Christmas season. The origin of the Candy Cane Martini is still unknown, but the classic martini is said to have originated during the Gold Rush, when a bartender named Martinez ran out of champagne and hence mixed what he had, in short, our today’s cocktail was born that day. Tom & Jerry: A drink that is just as fun and weird as the cartoon. Tom & Jerry is a creamy drink similar to Eggnog but is served warm. It is believed to have been created by British sports journalist Pierce Egan and has become a winter staple today. It is just warm milk, but with steroids. Kidding, it is warm milk mixed with shots of brandy and rum. Even today many bars mix up batches of warm milk for the chilly winter night. Non-alcoholic Thanksgiving Punch: Even though the name suggests Thanksgiving, drinks are best served when you like having one. So, the Thanksgiving punch is great for Christmas too, as it has notes of cinnamon and orange that give the perfect cosiness for the winter. It consists of apple cider, sparkling blood orange juice, and sparkling grape juice with a dash of fresh orange and cranberry. A splash of rum, reposado tequila, or Anejo tequila is all you need, to transform this mocktail into a cocktail. Festivals are the season to celebrate, and the celebration gets even better with a tasty drink. Do try these cocktails this Christmas, and enjoy sipping on life forever.
