People tend to misconceive the whole concept of art and undervalue the existence of mental health. And somehow, this commonality of being underrated is what makes the two complement each other for the best. The combination of Art and Mental Health might sound bizarre initially but makes perfect sense after gaining a clear perspective. And to perceive it clearly, let’s begin by separately understanding their essence. What is Art? The concept of art has been changing over the centuries and we can go about it in several ways. Art can often be contemplated as any and every kind of activity or creation that helps us express ourselves and intrigue other’s sense of emotions. It can be deep literature or mere scribbling, music production or sculpting, writing short poems to even dancing. Basically, everything that lets our feelings out through an activity can be considered as art. What is Therapy? There are different types of therapeutic methods and of diverse degrees depending upon person to person. Also, it’s not mandatory to suffer from a mental disorder or any sort of psychological distress to be eligible for therapy. Amongst the multiple elements of art, one is that it’s the solution to all your confusing situations where you find it hard to express and explore yourself, the kind of situation which leads to disturbed mental well-being. Mental health is something which is even ignored by us at times. But we all need to acknowledge it before it takes over our mind. Self-expression through creativity can be very revealing and soothing. Creating art helps you take a stop and have a look back at what is up with your life and how is it affecting your choices and also lets you recognize feelings existing in the back of your mind. The therapy of art eases your emotions and releases your stress while working as a remedy to your depression. What’s important to remember is, you don’t have to be an artist to perform art therapy but just honest with yourself and the inborn artist in you will wake effortlessly. In case you are a wine-lover, I do not need to explain you the types of wine available out there and surely the concept of “wine tasting” is not new to you. But did you know about the 5 S’s of wine tasting? If yes, great! If not, then you must not leave this article as this article is going to talk exactly about it. Wine tasting is nothing less than an art and there are precise and well defined steps for the same. Let us jump directly to these 5 “S” of wine tasting: See: Well, I am sure you have been fascinated about the different colors of wine available in the market. So the very first step is all about seeing through the wine and this is a very important step while tasting wine. The color should be examined well while tasting wine and for this very reason most of the times the wine is served in a room which is having white background. The color will give you a clue about the variety of grapes used and the age of the wine. Experts suggest taking your wine in “stemmed wine glass”. Do not forget to tilt the glass against the white background to see the true color of the wine. Swirl: Taking the wine poured glasses and then slightly twisting it in the air definitely looks very fancy. But do you know why this step is so important? Because while swirling, the wine gets the required amount of oxygen to “open up, as in the aroma of the wine starts to hit your olfactory senses. This step helps wine to absorb oxygen and oxygen helps wine to break down and eventually softens which is a good thing! Sniff: Now that from your previous step you could unleash the aroma of the wine, it’s important to take a good note of the same. For that you need to sniff the wine and let the aroma sink in your nostrils to enable you to understand the sources of the fine wine that you are about to taste! Sip: Now that you have got yourself accustomed with the aroma, it’s important for you to take a good sip of the lovely wine from your stemmed wine glass. Take a good sip and whirl it around in your mouth for like 4-5 seconds before gulping it down. Try and understand if you can evaluate any distinct taste. Savor: This is kind of an after-taste experience. Once you have gulped down a few sips of the wine in question, try and examine for how long the taste stays in your mouth. Whether you experienced any particular dominating taste or it was well balanced. Experts say if the after-taste lingers over 20 minutes in your mouth then my friend you have experience an exceptionally good wine! A women’s life is scandalous and decided by the way she dresses or looks, it is the harsh reality of the women beauty standards where aesthetics is everything. A judgmental world where lipsticks are more expensive than books because that’s how the society is, isn’t it? Makeup, surgery and the way I “should” dress, publicised through all social media making young girls think they are to look a certain way. Society has made it a norm for women to dress pretty with makeup done neatly and not to dress tomboyish as it is impolite for a girl to be dressed in men’s clothing. Funny thing is it doesn’t even matter if she’s perfect with beautiful skin and a neatly dressed or if she is tom boyishly dressed with bad skin, it doesn’t matter the amount or makeup she has on or does not because the society still will judge, it will still try to nit-pick on whatever they can. You may think if she’s in a Miniskirt people will drool over her and if she is in a Salwar Suit people might call her a ‘behenji’; to that, yes, that might happen with our society falling into the tracks of western culture people might like the miniskirt and beautifully done makeup better but salwar suit has its own charm and will also invite a lot of spectators. But it doesn’t matter if it’s a Salwar Suit or a Miniskirt as the female behind it will still be criticized, as if her change in size or dressing has let everyone down. Her body is caged in reviews and views with titles on her as if she’s a zoo animal, shouldn’t she be allowed to dress however she wants? Shouldn’t she wear as much makeup as she wants or not? Society may change with feminist movements going around the globe, this mentality might change and till then all we can do is to stop asking the question about which one is better, Miniskirt or Salwar Suit because it doesn’t really matter as we all are passengers of the same ship which is headed by the captain called “Society” and we all are suffering the same from the same judgment as others. But when you show your curiosity to know more about his life, he simply ignores to answer or refuses to open up about those with you. Well, I do agree there are few people who take some time to open up but hey, that cannot be a forever thing. So, if even after a few dates or meet ups he is not ready to open up much to you about himself and his life. Then, darling, you know what it means! Not An Initiator: If he lets you plan everything without taking a slightest of interest in those planning activities or even does never bring up the topic to go out with you as much as you ask him or plan things then again you should get it clear that maybe he is just being nice not to avoid your plans directly but he is not yet into you to actually take initiatives to plan things out. Bummer right? But ask yourself if you will really want this to continue and whether this will actually make you happy in the long run? If it says NO then you know you need to stop thinking about this guy. Priorities: Well, we all love to be the priority and not the option in friendships, relationships or dates. So, if he is always putting other things over you directly or indirectly then you know what you really need to know! You are smart and you should know when to walk away or walk in. No Acknowledgement: If he has not introduced you to his friend circle even as a friend then you know your position and importance in his life. Acknowledgments are really important in case you are really planning for something long term. So care for that self-respect darling and you know what will it tell you better than I pen it down here. So, this list is pretty much it to say the guy you are having in your mind and heart is having the same thing from his end for you or not! It is totally okay if you are simply crushing over someone! But in case you are seeing someone or dating, someone, then it is important for both of you to be on the same page. Otherwise, it will only lead you to heartaches and breaks. But trust these feelings, they only clear the path in your life for someone more worthy than this guy you are currently obsessed about. Things do fall in place at the right time. Just remember one thing, God gives us the people we need and deserve not always the ones we want. Keep the faith alive and never stop believing in love and miracles. Cause miracles happen when you believe in them! P.S. All you have to do is make a rough record or list of things that you felt grateful for. You don’t need to prepare a whole long list everyday and feel bounded about it but simply add one or more little things that made you smile and feel grateful, on a daily basis. This practice increases your ability to acknowledge things you usually fail to notice. Express your love and appreciation ~ Expression of what you feel is powerful and gives a sense of satisfaction and bliss. Write notes or letters to people you love, people who made you happy someday or simply the ones who were kind to you and you appreciate their act. Nurture your friendships and embrace what you have by sharing what you feel. This makes the other person happy as well and that reciprocation multiplies your satisfaction. The expression of your positive feelings also help in building good relationships and bridges the communication gap. Avoid negative media and switch to positive ~ Our senses, what we see and hear influences our actions and mood. Watching and listening to negative media brings you closer to negativity which starts reflecting in your behaviour as well. Enrolling with an NGO can be a good idea but if not something in that large of scale, try doing small acts of kindness daily. Helping old aged people with whatever they need in a situation, feeding stray dogs, donating your old clothes or maybe just giving ten bucks extra to the street vegetable vendor without trying to bargain can be counted as your acts of kindness. The moment you start appreciating what you have by comparing yourself with the ones who have less and not more than you, you’ll understand the importance of having a giving nature and will start helping people out with whatever you can. The humbleness you show while doing such things makes you feel good about yourself subconsciously which later on helps you feel positive about yourself. Avoid criticizing, gossiping and talking negatively ~ You become what you feed your mind, what you believe, what you speak and what you surround yourself with. If you keep criticizing people and notice what their flaws are in your perspective, you’ll end up becoming a gloom-ridden person who fails to find and look at the plus of others and not minus. This gets reflected in our personality easily and we develop a negative vibe. Instead of gossiping around about somebody else’s life or criticizing them, try on appreciating them for what they are good at and notice the same. Nobody is perfect and everybody has flaws, our wisdom lies in accepting them while helping them out of it and not by discussing about their lives. You also must surround yourself with people who have an uplifting nature. Stop complaining ~ Like our happiness multiplies by expressing and sharing, the same happens with every other emotion. If you complain about situations in your life, the more you think and talk about it, the more it strengthens up in your heart and mind. You must understand the fact that there’s always gonna be difficulties and problems throughout your life and you’ll have to deal with it alone. What can be changed is the way you look at it, the way you perceive it. Try on having a positive approach towards your problems. Instead of feeling sad over it, try finding out what you got to learn through it. Try analyzing the whole phase and telling yourself what you’ll take forward about it and what you’ll leave behind. Make sure what you take forward is what helps you grow and not keep you stuck with the past. Start and end your day with gratitude ~ Be thankful for each day you’re gifted and take it as an opportunity to become a better person. Keep in mind that the gratitude you’re practicing is for your own good and your kind actions are just a source that lead you to the peace. Remind yourself that you’re worthy of all the bliss and ready for all the difficulties; for whatever happens, happens for good. Just like you begin your day with gratitude, end it the same way. It can be a little prayer or just a thanks, a text message of appreciation to somebody or a pat on your back while telling yourself that you made the day a good one with no regrets but happiness and peace. Some of the psychological aspects of practicing gratitude are the higher level of positive emotions, alertness and awakeness towards life everyday, more optimism, peace and happiness. Gratitude also assists our health by resulting with balanced blood pressure, good sleep, stronger immune system and makes us less bothered about the pain and aches. The attitude of gratitude not only helps us in multiple ways but the people around us as well. Our life is a sum of both good and bad. We learn and grow through our experiences. Forbes recently published its annual list of billionaires and found that the number of billionaires has dropped significantly because of the pandemic. Even among those still on the list, more than half saw their wealth decrease since the pandemic. There were 2,095 billionaires on the list when it was finalized on March 18, according to the business website. That was 58 fewer billionaires than last year and 226 fewer than at the beginning of the month, Forbes reported. Of course, with the markets in flux because of the coronavirus, each billionaire’s net worth also fluctuates depending on the day. Despite this, Jeff Bezos, 56, still stands to be the richest man in the world, despite transferring a quarter of his Amazon stake to his ex-wife MacKenzie last summer, according to Forbes. He was worth $113 billion on March 18. Coronavirus has led Jeff Bezos to donate $100M to feed hungry Americans. Bezos’ gift was the largest single donation Feeding America has ever received. “Today, I want to support those on the front lines at our nation’s food banks and those who are relying on them for food with a $100 million gift to @FeedingAmerica,” Bezos wrote on Instagram. Despite the plight of the world and the ongoing economic effect of the coronavirus crisis, billionaires in the U.S. have seen their wealth increase by over $406 billion in the past month. Other billionaires who have seen their wealth grow amid the pandemic include Tesla CEO Elon Musk — also by nearly $10 billion since January 1. In that time, Zoom founder Eric Yuan has added $3.5 billion to his net worth at $7.4 billion, thanks to the popularity of his video conferencing software in lockdown. by Anushka Singh Dear Earth 1 October 2020 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement Dear Earth, I hope you’re doing fine. It has been an extended time since we last talked. To be honest, I feel wordless. It’s one of those dilemmas where we have got an entire ocean of thoughts inside us but we feel clueless of how to let it flow. We’ve been here before for countless times, the crisis chats, arguments, disputes, tears, promises and plenty more. But now, it’s different. Now I understand why they say: “It’s not you, it’s me.” I loved you from the instant I became capable of even understanding words like these. I saw your unequaled beauty, your tenderness and warmth, your soothing and diligently devoting nature. Although you never reacted to my ceaseless vents, you continued to make me feel the solace around you that I felt nowhere else. And, I am thankful. You have always been there, making me feel the very fact that I am not alone, through your littlest of efforts. Nightly, when I’ve spent hours watching the sky trying not to feel sad, you made me feel your presence. Every sundown, after I sat on the waterfront admiring your charm, the wind kissed my cheeks. I do know it surely was you, notifying that you love me back. I muse on all the content times we humans explored your magnificent mountains and endless seas; after we lazed in your sun, pacified by your pleasing breeze. I always hoped for these precious moments which are so near my heart, to never end. Over the years, I have tried to carry out my part of promises. I assumed multiple times, why do you even need me or people to talk on your behalf if you are the one to create us in the first place. I wasn’t sure if it was just another trick of yours to make people act or you were just terrified of something. I feel apologetic to admit, I didn’t even ask you. You were and you have always been my ally, my best friend and I like a stupid, just assumed that I knew what was best. I guess that is the point, isn’t it? You kept trying to speak. To me, to people, to the universe. We just took it light enough for you to destroy yourself. But today, I accept. It isn’t you, it’s me; it’s us. The reason i’m writing this letter is because I have realised something. It’s not you who needs the saving, it’s me. It’s me and us, the humans. We humans, who try to become the hero for you, forgot that you don’t actually need one. In those magnificent mountains and endless seas, lies the flair for us to nourish, clothe and foster ourselves, without limit. Your warm sun and pleasing breeze can give us the energy to learn, work and prosper over a lifetime. You’ve always been there helping us literally survive and live. You have been there in every way that you could but when came our turn, we backed off. We became selfish as we are. Dear earth, here I am. Here I am, apologizing on behalf of the whole civilization and human race, for destroying all that you gave us with all of your love. I am sorry, for the things that i could not stop and the things i am unable to change anymore. Please know, all of me loves all of you regardless of anything. It’s just that you won the game of proving yourself and I failed. Yours truly, Someone who is really sorry. But being healthy is not just being physically fit it also includes if the individual is mentally and emotionally fit. Unfortunately, countless people suffer from mental health problems that are just as deadly as physical problems. To understand the importance of mental health first we need to understand what does it mean. These all affect our mental health to great extents and that is the reason why we need to take help of psychologists, councilors, social helpers or maybe just talk to our loved ones because having bad mental health can not just be harmful to us but for everyone around us too. For example, depression is an ignored but dangerous illness if not cured, long term depression can lead to further mental as well as physical illness, can cause the victim to have maniac episodes, suicidal thoughts urge to self-harm, remove their problems perhaps murdering the ones troubling them sometimes too, destruction, isolation, and much more. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 16.2 million U.S. adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2016. This represents 6.7 percent of the U.S. adult population. It is calculated that the ratio of a mental health professional helper to the public is 1 to 40,000 people. So it is high time that we need more people in this field of profession. By all this, we understand that it is very important that we take care of our mental health at an initial stage before it turns out that we r also boarding the train to depression. Staying mentally healthy helps us face challenges, stresses, make better decisions, cope better with sudden changes and setbacks which life throws at us. It also prepares us to be more efficient.
