- How Fashion Haul Is Damaging Our Environment: Explained
by Aishwarya How Fashion Haul Is Damaging Our Environment: Explained 3 November 2022 FASHION Advertisement If you are active on social media, you would know what fashion haul is. At least once, these fashion haul videos must have popped on your feed. These videos can also be there in your ‘for you’ feed. Well, you might think, what’s the big deal if these videos are there? So let us tell you that, these videos are destroying our environment. Not in a real sense, but hypothetically speaking, these hauls lead to excessive buying of clothes and that leads to the destruction of our environment. A haul is a video that is promotional and, most fashion influencers do it. The company sends them a large number of clothes to try on and review. In return, the influencers get a hefty compensation in money or its kind. Now, the problem with such a promotion is that it provokes the audience to buy stuff that isn’t even needed by them. These hauls are heavily focused on fast fashion , which on its own is damaging to our nature. Though the hauls are bad for nature, people seem to like those content. The concept to understand here is that hauls are not only bad for our nature but are also for our budget. TikTok is a video content platform and, there are more than 1 billion views on the #clothinghaul hashtag and almost 13 billion views on the #haul hashtag. These numbers show us the reach, these videos have amongst the audience. The famous Shein is one of the most popular companies, in the haul trend. Shein hauls are popular for sure, but they are also driven by a marketing strategy. Shein has an affiliate program for influencers , that pays them a 10-20% commission for the haul post. Now, let’s talk about the damage, that these fast fashion hauls do to our environment. According to a study , the fast fashion industry creates almost 92 million tons of waste and, consumes around 79 trillion litres of water each year. As an industry, the fast fashion industry is responsible for 1/3rd of all microplastics found in the ocean and, produces almost 20% of global water waste. These numbers will concern you, but the fact is that most of fast fashion’s waste comes from post-production. Textile waste, the waste from unused textiles and old cloths, ends up in landfills. Around 85% of all textiles wind up in landfills every year- equivalent to one garbage truck filled with clothes being dumped in landfills every second. If this doesn’t concern you- which shouldn't be the case, there’s more than this. The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, after the oil industry. Well, if you are thinking that, then why is it always the fashion industry that is being targeted? Then the reason is that fashion is a want and not a need. An excessive amount of clothing is harming the environment and also your bank account (read: month-end balance). The wastewater that this fast fashion industry produces, has toxic substances in it like lead, mercury, and arsenic. These substances are extremely harmful to aquatic life- where these substances are released, and also to millions of people who live by the river banks. A huge quantity of freshwater is used for dyeing and other processes, which leads to a shortage even more. To this, cotton needs a lot of water to grow, up to 20,000 litres of water is needed to produce 1kg of cotton. Another contributor to pollution is chemicals. They are used in every process, right from dyeing to result. The fashion industry also accounts for 10% of global carbon emission. It is also seen that the fashion industry has a major part in the degradation of soil. Apart from these environmental issues, there also exist some societal issues. The workers in the fashion industry are compensated very less and, and they work for a crazy amount of time. This is to keep up with the trends and deliver the clothes within the shortest period possible. This makes them a slave to the time, and they often end up getting burned out mentally and physically. The fast fashion and haul culture also give rise to the flex culture. Youngsters are on a quest to always have the trendiest clothes and also an excessive amount of clothing to wear. When there is a will, there is a way. So, the solution to this problem/disaster lies in acknowledging the harm that it is creating and, showing some willingness to change. Change isn’t difficult in today’s world, where nearly everything and anything has a cool alternative available. We just need to be mindful and choose sustainable options rather than a convenient option. A haul is a video that is promotional and, most fashion influencers do it. The company sends them a large number of clothes to try on and review. In return, the influencers get a hefty compensation in money or its kind. - The Very Naked Case Of John Cena
By Anushka Sharma The Very Naked Case Of John Cena 13 March 2024 FASHION Advertisement The glitz, the glamor, and yes, the unexpected nudity—welcome to the wild world of the Oscars ! Let's dive into the sensational saga of John Cena's bare-it-all moment at the 96th Annual Academy Awards in 2024 and how it echoes the infamous streaking incident from 1974. Picture this: Hollywood's finest gather to celebrate the crème de la crème of cinema at the Oscars. But amidst the star-studded affair, there's one man who decides to steal the spotlight in the most daring way possible—none other than wrestling legend turned actor, John Cena. Now, Cena wasn't up for any awards that night, but he sure made his mark. Strutting onto the stage alongside host Jimmy Kimmel, Cena left jaws dropping and tongues wagging as he stood there, completely in the buff. It was a bold move, to say the least, but Cena wasn't about to let a little thing like clothes get in the way of making a statement. So, what prompted this risqué display? Well, Kimmel, ever the mischief-maker, harked back to a legendary moment in Oscars history—the streaking incident of 1974. Back then, a fellow by the name of Robert Opel caused quite the stir by dashing across the stage in his birthday suit. And Kimmel, always one for a good laugh, thought it would be hilarious to recreate that moment with Cena. But Cena wasn't having it. With a twinkle in his eye and a hint of mischief, he declared, "The male body is not a joke." It was a powerful statement, reminding us all that there's more to nudity than just shock value. And with that, Cena took his place on stage, ready to present the award for Best Costume Design. Of course, presenting an award at the Oscars is no easy feat, especially when you're doing it in the buff. Cena struggled to open the winner's envelope, his lack of clothing proving to be more of a hindrance than a help. But hey, that's showbiz for you! Meanwhile, let's rewind the clock to 1974, the year of the original Oscars streaker, Robert Opel. As host David Niven attempted to introduce Elizabeth Taylor, Opel made his grand entrance, streaking across the stage with reckless abandon. It was a moment of pure chaos and hilarity, with Niven quick to quip, "Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?" Opel's motives were unclear—some say he was advocating for body positivity, while others claim he simply wanted his fifteen minutes of fame. But regardless of his intentions, Opel's streaking stunt left an indelible mark on Oscars history, setting the stage for future moments of unexpected hilarity. Back in 2024, Cena's bare-it-all moment may not have been as spontaneous as Opel's, but it was certainly no less entertaining. As he stood there, stark naked, presenting an award at the most prestigious event in Hollywood, Cena reminded us all that sometimes, you've just got to strip away the pretense and embrace the absurdity of it all. So, whether you're a wrestling fan, a movie buff, or just someone who enjoys a good laugh, Cena's naked Oscars moment is sure to go down in history as one of the most memorable—and hilarious—moments in Oscars history. Here's to the wild, wacky world of Hollywood, where anything can happen, and often does! - Repeating clothes isn't a faux pas anymore
by Aishwarya Repeating clothes isn't a faux pas anymore 5 November 2022 FASHION Advertisement Fashion is an integral part of our personality. We constantly take inspiration from social media and celebrities. Though we get to know the fashion trends from them, we also get the notion that we have to wear a new piece of clothing every single time. Moreso, the people who have a presence on social media get influenced by celebrities and fashion influencers. It’s almost a nightmare for social media influencers, to repeat their clothes. Even we expect them to wear new clothes every single time, which is neither possible nor viable. The celebrities we look up to are the ones who get their dresses sourced from various mediums. For a common man like us, it’s not a viable option to opt for. Repeating clothes have been made up into a controversy that, we now need to normalize it. Repeating clothes is one of the best decisions you can take because it has a lot of benefits. You don’t have to be a sustainability influencer, to promote repeating the clothes. It is a very basic thing that we all have been doing, now even celebrities are opening up about it. Many celebrities are seen repeating their clothes and owning them with confidence and grace. Now, let us see the 3 reasons why you should also repeat your clothes. SUSTAINABILITY : According to research, we almost generate 92 million tonnes of waste every year. This number is not surprising because that’s what happens when we are expected to wear new clothes every single time we step out of our house. By simply repeating your clothes, you can reduce textile wastage and carbon footprint. It is to be noted that the clothing industry generates 10% of all global carbon emissions and, it is the second biggest industrial polluter. The fast fashion culture has given rise to carbon emissions. The fashion industry has gained its profit through fast fashion, but our environment is paying for it. Fashion is all about you and, your confidence is what makes it fashionable and not the attires. DECISION FATIGUE : Do you remember the co-founder and CEO of Facebook, wearing that grey t-shirt? Well, it has become a uniform for Mark Zuckerberg. However, most billionaires wear the same set of clothing and, it has a reason for it. They are well aware of a phenomenon called decision fatigue- a fatigue that deteriorates the quality of the decision taken by human beings. Our brain requires a lot of energy for making a decision and, that is the reason why most billionaires prefer to wear the same clothes. By doing so, they reduce one more event of decision-making. It is very important for them, to manage their decision-making energy and focus on the more important ones. SAVE MONEY : We all spend so much of our income on buying new clothes. Rather we could save money by thrifting or borrowing the clothes that are mostly a one-time fashion. The dresses for weddings are expensive and one-time fashion, these can be borrowed, thrifted or, reused with different accessories. We can reuse many of our clothes by just accessorizing them differently. These tweaks will make you look put together and also save some penny for the end of the month. Repeating your clothes can be done without the fear of missing out. Fashion is to make us feel happy and confident and, even a wardrobe of 20 clothes will do it for you. Create your fashion and, be one. - Sapna Dhanwani's Journey: Balancing The Life Of Stardom And The Corporate
By Anushka Sharma Sapna Dhanwani's Journey: Balancing The Life Of Stardom And The Corporate 12 August 2024 LIFESTYLE Advertisement Sapna Dhanwani's venture into content creation is a tale of transformation and self-discovery. Her story began in the early days of Instagram, when it was just a platform for sharing personal moments. Balancing a traditional 9-to-5 job, Sapna used Instagram to post pictures of her meals, travel, and fashion . It wasn't long before her unique style and taste attracted attention. As friends and followers began asking about her outfits and where to purchase them, Sapna noticed a growing interest in her content. Despite her desire to pursue content creation full-time, she hesitated. The comfort of a stable income and the uncertainty of a new career path made it challenging to take the leap. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for change. With more time at home and a desire for a career shift, Sapna contemplated diving into content creation full-time. The arrival of her baby further intensified her need for a flexible work schedule. Sapna found herself struggling to balance her demanding job with her role as a new mother, leading to feelings of dissatisfaction and burnout. Resigning from her corporate job was a significant decision for Sapna. She acknowledged that it wasn’t just about leaving a steady paycheck but about reclaiming her personal happiness and well-being. After resigning, she set herself a timeline—six months to a year—to see if her content creation career could take off. If not, at least she would be present for her daughter and continue pursuing her passion as a hobby. To her delight, the response was positive. Brands started showing interest in working with her, and Sapna found herself collaborating with some well-known names. The transition from corporate life to content creation allowed her to exercise her creativity fully. Unlike her previous job, where brand guidelines were strict, Sapna now had the freedom to set her own rules and drive her content according to her vision. However, the journey was not without its challenges. The initial months without a regular income were tough. Sapna had to adjust her lifestyle and budget more carefully. Despite these difficulties, she remained optimistic, leveraging her savings to navigate through the lean periods. Her approach to content creation became more aligned with her personal values and interests, leading to a fulfilling career shift. Sapna’s experience highlights a broader narrative about the evolving role of influencers and content creators. In places like Dubai, the influencer market is burgeoning, providing ample opportunities for those who are professional and dedicated. The shift towards influencer marketing reflects a broader trend where brands value authentic content and personal connections over traditional advertising methods. For Sapna, the move from Dubai to Ras al Khaimah—while still working in Dubai—has been a practical choice to balance her family life with her career. Her story is an inspiring example of how embracing change and pursuing one’s passions can lead to a rewarding career shift, even when faced with uncertainty and initial financial challenges. - The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom
by Yashi Srivastava The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom 15 December 2022 FASHION Advertisement India is a land of traditions that go thousands of years back. From Ayurveda to Yoga and festivals, even buttons, exhibit Her glorious culture, and a splendour that my country really is! Amongst the many spectacular factors that help India stand out from the western countries is the way Indians dressed – back in time. So, when we talk about Indian attire, there is no way that we wouldn’t talk about the exuberance that flow from the oldest Indian fabric used for weaving attires – handloom! Before the Britishers took over our beautiful country, Indians wore attired made only from handloom fabric. So, yes, the history and heritage of Indian handloom goes way back in time and in this article, we shall throw some light on the rich history of Indian handloom. What is handloom? Handloom was originally a variety of wooden frames used by artisans to weave fabrics out of them. The fabrics usually came from natural fibre including cotton, wool, jute, silk, etc. The procedure involved spinning the yarn followed by coloring to weaving the fabric on the loom – the final product came to be known as handloom. The history of Indian handloom – Early Days The history of Indian handloom takes us back to the Indus Valley civilization, when the first evidence of the fabric came up. Ancient India was the only producer of raw cotton and even exported the same to other countries, including Rome, China, and European nations. In fact, back in the time, every village in the country has its own weavers who spent hours in making attires like saree and dhoti to fulfil the clothing needs of the villagers. The beauty of the time was that the Indian handloom, in its beginning, was the purest material and the same showed when people wore it. The history of Indian handloom – The Gandhian Era Even though India enjoyed a golden phase of handloom heritage, its popularity went down once British took over the country. In order to increase the consumption and production of the yarn, Britishers used violence and coercion on the workers and weavers. The machine-made imported yarn made it difficult for the poor workers to keep up with the production, and thus, led to the downfall of the fabric. Most workers started working for the middlemen and traders, and the authenticity of Indian handloom shook to the core. However, during the Gandhian era, the age of handlooms was revived through Swadeshi Movement, where Mahatma Gandhi re-introduced the spinning wheel or ‘charkha’ to continue the production of khadi products. Since every Indian was involved in spinning the ‘charkha,’ the economy of the country saw a massive upgrade! People burnt the imported clothes and wore khadi everywhere, which even led to closing of mills in Manchester. The history of Indian handloom – Post Independence Even after India earned Her independence, textile industry continued to bloom and different weaving styles and fabrics were introduced. Even though, handloom didn’t rise exactly as high as it did before British colonisation, it was still widely used. The beauty of Indian handloom today Today, the cost of natural fibre is blowing by leaps and bounds because most people are not interested in buying the same these days. Most Indians prefer cheaper fabric and don’t really connect with the rich heritage of Indian handlooms. Khadi products, today, have a high cost, in comparison to other materials, and thus, not many regular people in India can afford to buy the fabric. Even so, the beauty of Indian handloom is unmatchable and still boasts of rich tradition and glorious past of our country. Even though the original Indian handloom cannot compete with the poly-mixed products that are way cheaper, the timelessness of handloom will always carry the hard work and skills of Indian craftsman from the past. Conclusion It is all right to say that the popularity of Indian handloom is only vanishing since the time we earned independence. The beautiful handloom deserves a place in the present as much as it did in the past. So, let’s work our bit to bring the true Indian attire back into business. Blob - The beauty of Indian handloom is such that goes back to the Indus Valley civilization, and even though, it faces tough competition from the poly-mix fibre today, the fabric has withheld a place of its own. Amidst the hustle of her college life and the unrelenting demands of content creation, Suhani welcomed us into her world, sharing her creative journey, motivations, and aspirations. "During my childhood, I recorded myself doing anything and everything, speaking my heart out and dancing in front of the camera." The seeds of her future as an influencer were sown early, nurtured by her intrinsic love for self-expression. The pivotal moment arrived when Suhani discovered the app "musically," now known as TikTok. "I started making videos randomly, never expecting anything, but gradually gaining many followers," she reminisced. By the time TikTok was banned in India in 2019, Suhani had already amassed a following of 300k. Unfazed by the setback, she shifted her focus to Instagram and began creating reels, steadily building a new audience. But the journey could have been smoother. Suhani shared the heartache of waking up one day to find her Instagram account hacked or deleted. "I tried to regain that account for months but could never get it back." Undeterred, she started anew, and within two years, she had garnered over 100k followers. Her determination to inspire others through creativity remained undiminished. "If you could have any superpower, what would it be?" we asked. Suhani's response revealed the empathetic core of her being. "I would choose to end the negativity and hate humans have for each other," she said. Her wish to dispel the darkness resonated deeply, reflecting the profound impact cyberbullying and negativity can have on individuals. "As a creator, I receive a lot of hate daily for what I do," Suhani shared candidly. "And I know that even a person not into content creation also goes through hate in real life." Her superpower, a testament to her resilience and compassion, highlighted the pressing need for kindness and understanding in the digital age. Her parting advice encapsulated the essence of her journey: "Believe in yourself no matter how difficult the times are. You do you. Don't care about the world; if something makes you happy, do it." - 8 Elementary Ways To Practice The Attitude Of Gratitude
by Anushka Singh 8 Elementary Ways To Practice The Attitude Of Gratitude 1 December 2020 LIFESTYLE Advertisement “Life is like a river. You can’t touch the same water twice because the flow that has passed will never pass again.” And, in this river-like life, time flies like the flow and is long passed till you acknowledge its value. We being humans, ignorant as we are, mostly forget to appreciate little things in life while there’s time and either complain or regret after its gone. Practicing gratitude can be an absolute game changer in our lives as it brings us closer to reality and the relatedness of everything in this world. Gratitude is that common key which unlocks uncountable doors to peace and well-being, both of our soul as well as our body, in numerous ways. It adds a little more essence to our lives by making us understand the importance of being grateful to what we have and appreciate life as it happens. As the scientific studies and research affirms, the feeling and expression of Gratitude has limitless positive outcomes. Be it your personal relationships, work life, mental health or even your immune system, Gratitude has its reflection over everything and aids to make you feel more alive. We often feel weak and baffled by those tough complex situations in our lives when we fail to find a way out or at least feel like it. In phases like these, people who practice gratitude usually come up with the reminder that even in the gloomiest moments, there’s always a beam of light shining through the darkness to make you recognize the brighter parts of every situation. There’s always a good hidden in the bad and your choice to uncover it with an open heart and mind is what makes everything worthwhile. The must known fact about practicing gratitude is, you don’t have to reserve it for epochal moments but notice it in the littlest of wins like you managing to witness the sunrise, getting free from your work before-time, a little chit-chat with a stranger on a shared cab or merely a hot cup of tea, it all depends on your perspective. People who are grateful, are the ones who are more stress resistant and know the art of celebrating life by living in the present. Here are 10 elementary steps to building your attitude of gratitude. Keep a gratitude journal ~ The most practiced way is maintaining a Gratitude journal and has resulted to be very effective. All you have to do is make a rough record or list of things that you felt grateful for. You don’t need to prepare a whole long list everyday and feel bounded about it but simply add one or more little things that made you smile and feel grateful, on a daily basis. This practice increases your ability to acknowledge things you usually fail to notice. Express your love and appreciation ~ Expression of what you feel is powerful and gives a sense of satisfaction and bliss. Write notes or letters to people you love, people who made you happy someday or simply the ones who were kind to you and you appreciate their act. Nurture your friendships and embrace what you have by sharing what you feel. This makes the other person happy as well and that reciprocation multiplies your satisfaction. The expression of your positive feelings also help in building good relationships and bridges the communication gap. Avoid negative media and switch to positive ~ Our senses, what we see and hear influences our actions and mood. Watching and listening to negative media brings you closer to negativity which starts reflecting in your behaviour as well. Try on watching positive videos, listening to soothing music, reading good books, all of this will help you notice and appreciate the good in the world and influence your behaviour positively. This helps people giving and attracting positive vibes which are very important to live and lead a healthy life. Observe the beauty of nature ~ A famous known and understood fact of life is, fall in love and find the beauty in things that would always stay along and you’d never need to search for it when you need it. Nature is one such beautiful part of our lives that won’t leave our side once you fall in love with it. The soothing wind, the sound of sea waves, colours of sunset shining through the clouds, the flower blooming as if smiling at you, these things are eternal and always makes you smile once you start understanding its beauty. The sky full of stars and you star-gazing can never feel lonely. Observing the beauty of nature brings happiness to your life by simply existing. Involve yourself in the acts of kindness ~ Join a cause that matters to you or get yourself involved in social work. Enrolling with an NGO can be a good idea but if not something in that large of scale, try doing small acts of kindness daily. Helping old aged people with whatever they need in a situation, feeding stray dogs, donating your old clothes or maybe just giving ten bucks extra to the street vegetable vendor without trying to bargain can be counted as your acts of kindness. The moment you start appreciating what you have by comparing yourself with the ones who have less and not more than you, you’ll understand the importance of having a giving nature and will start helping people out with whatever you can. The humbleness you show while doing such things makes you feel good about yourself subconsciously which later on helps you feel positive about yourself. Avoid criticizing, gossiping and talking negatively ~ You become what you feed your mind, what you believe, what you speak and what you surround yourself with. If you keep criticizing people and notice what their flaws are in your perspective, you’ll end up becoming a gloom-ridden person who fails to find and look at the plus of others and not minus. This gets reflected in our personality easily and we develop a negative vibe. Instead of gossiping around about somebody else’s life or criticizing them, try on appreciating them for what they are good at and notice the same. Nobody is perfect and everybody has flaws, our wisdom lies in accepting them while helping them out of it and not by discussing about their lives. You also must surround yourself with people who have an uplifting nature. Stop complaining ~ Like our happiness multiplies by expressing and sharing, the same happens with every other emotion. If you complain about situations in your life, the more you think and talk about it, the more it strengthens up in your heart and mind. You must understand the fact that there’s always gonna be difficulties and problems throughout your life and you’ll have to deal with it alone. What can be changed is the way you look at it, the way you perceive it. Try on having a positive approach towards your problems. Instead of feeling sad over it, try finding out what you got to learn through it. Try analyzing the whole phase and telling yourself what you’ll take forward about it and what you’ll leave behind. Make sure what you take forward is what helps you grow and not keep you stuck with the past. Start and end your day with gratitude ~ Be thankful for each day you’re gifted and take it as an opportunity to become a better person. Keep in mind that the gratitude you’re practicing is for your own good and your kind actions are just a source that lead you to the peace. Remind yourself that you’re worthy of all the bliss and ready for all the difficulties; for whatever happens, happens for good. Just like you begin your day with gratitude, end it the same way. It can be a little prayer or just a thanks, a text message of appreciation to somebody or a pat on your back while telling yourself that you made the day a good one with no regrets but happiness and peace. Some of the psychological aspects of practicing gratitude are the higher level of positive emotions, alertness and awakeness towards life everyday, more optimism, peace and happiness. Gratitude also assists our health by resulting with balanced blood pressure, good sleep, stronger immune system and makes us less bothered about the pain and aches. The attitude of gratitude not only helps us in multiple ways but the people around us as well. Our life is a sum of both good and bad. We learn and grow through our experiences. The sense of acceptance and gratitude brings us closer to the ultimate meaning of life and helps us live it to the fullest and isn’t that the best return gift to life? - Pad vs Banana
by Aparajita Jaiswal Pad vs Banana 19 April 2022 SOCIETY Advertisement Advertisement What is Sex-education? I grew-up in a small town, where the people would receive a thrashing for uttering the word SEX. Writing the word SEX on any piece of paper, was no less than penning our own death warrant. Therefore, learning about it from our schoolbooks became impossible, and talking about it in the public was considered offensive. Along with my puberty came the age of 2G internet, and along with downloading video games setup on proxy servers, porn movies became the hot talk. These enabled the boys of my age to watch videos of penetrative sex. Yes, it was porn movies that gave us them first sex lessons. The debate of ban over pornography has always received mixed opinions, and even mine has fluctuated with time. Sex-education is certainly a must for every person in their late teenage and early adulthood. Particularly, for people like me who grow up in small towns with not much provided guidance. Having been a porn addict, I find myself qualified (read and learned) enough to write against pornography. Pornography lacks consent: I have watched many porn movies in which the female actors are seen undressing their male partners without their consent. The male actors are seen groping their female partners without their consent. Basically, pornography, in general promotes (at least supports) molestation in the name of sex. People may have different political, religious, and regional identities, but no one should consider molestation normal. Anyone defending pornography, for any intention, should at least not let this very thought slip away from their mind. Pornography encourages incest: A significant number of porn movies show the male actor having sex with a girl playing the role of his mother, sister, sister-in-law and even daughter. While the religions and cultures have different opinions on incest, research shows that incest is harmful to possible off springs. Majority of sex educators (gynaecologists) strongly oppose incest, and hence incest shouldn’t be encouraged in the name of sex through pornography. Sanitary napkins vs Bananas: A good porn movie (according to my younger version) is incomplete without a girl inserting unconventional items (like a banana) inside her private parts. The availability of such videos on the internet is a matter of disgrace. Sex education should be about spreading knowledge on the healthy menstrual cycle, sanitation of genitals, valuing consent, and so on. It should certainly not be about the ill-treatment of genitals but rather about EXPLORATION of sexuality. P.S.I do not intend to offend anyone. - Into The Enticing and Harmful World of Fast Fashion
by Rupashree Ravi Into The Enticing and Harmful World of Fast Fashion 13 August 2022 FASHION Advertisement What comes to your mind when someone says trendy, fashionable, and affordable? Of course, big brands like H&M, Zara, Forever 21, and Shein, which are widely popular and are known for their cheap and fashionable clothing. These are clothing giants that entice their loyal customer base with sales and exciting offers, and you cannot say no to them. But the cost of making these clothes comes at a heavy price. These brands are the biggest players in the fashion industry and are also among the most damaging industries for the environment. They are fast fashion retailers who bring out large quantities of a variety of products and allow consumers to get more fashion and product differentiation at a very low price. Stores like Zara, Forever 21 and H&M are the pioneers of fast fashion in the 21st century ‘Fast fashion’ is cheaply manufactured and low priced garments that copy the latest catwalk styles and get quick entry into retail stores in order to maximise on the current fashion trends. It is called the fast fashion model because it involves rapid design, mass production, and distribution as well as heavy marketing. Today, it takes less than fifteen days for a garment to move from the design stage to being sold physically in stores. The term has gained more prominence in recent times and is often used in conversations revolving around environmental consciousness as well as sustainability. This is extremely worrisome because the fashion industry, especially since the rise of fast fashion, has become the second largest consumer of water and is responsible for 10 per cent of carbon emissions and 20 per cent of wastewater globally. It also dries up water sources and pollutes waterways. This is because these fast fashion retailers use about 700 gallons of water to make one cotton shirt and about 2,000 gallons to make one pair of jeans. Moreover, the textile dyes that they use contribute to polluting these waterways as the chemicals leak into the water, which also poses health risks to the general population. Fast fashion has been growing at an unsustainable rate These brands also use synthetic fibres like polyester, nylon and acrylic which take several years to biodegrade. The fast fashion model is also an energy-intensive process. Even cotton is not an environment-friendly fabric to manufacture for fast fashion companies as they are exposed to a number of pesticides that are very harmful. So, what’s the solution? The alternative to fast fashion is sustainable fashion or eco-fashion. To counter the environmental damage caused by fast fashion, sustainable fabrics like wild silk, organic cotton, hemp, linen, and lyocell can be used in a responsible manner. We can certainly choose to shop in a more sustainable way, but getting involved with sustainable fashion does not necessarily require buying anything new. Sustainable fashion aims to be conscious and ethical Sustainable fashion brands like Brogger, Insom, Ka-Sha focus on bringing out cruelty-free products. They use fewer resources wherever possible to reduce impact and conserve water by using organic mills and ozone technology in its production to benefit people, plants, and animals. Some of these brands also give away their profits to charitable causes. Even vegan leather has become very popular in recent times. Local Indie fashion brands are becoming popular It is essential that we as consumers stop buying from these fast fashion companies and instead choose locally produced garments. Try opting for local Indian brands like Udd Stories or Anokhi that are made by indigenous communities. #FastFashion #SustainableFashion #EcoFashion #VocalForLocal #OOTD SEARCH The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom FASHION Fashion In The 19th Century FASHION Colour Psychology in Fashion: Explained FASHION The Influence Of Kanye West On Fashion FASHION K-Pop Fashion And Its Impact On Global Wardrobe FASHION POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Dubai Fashion Week Day Five: Emerging Talents, Cultural Heritage, And Global Fashion Dialogues 14 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Marina Ignjat: A Journey Through Style And Travel 13 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Anaya Collection Unveils "Gaudí’s Reverie" At Dubai Fashion Week: A Fusion Of Love, Technique, And Playful Elegance 11 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Hebajasmi Unveils Captivating New Collection For SS25: A Masterpiece Of Art And Fashion 10 September 2024 FASHION RELATED POSTS
- All About Homebrewing: The Art of Making Probiotic Fermented Beverages
by Rupashree Ravi All About Homebrewing: The Art of Making Probiotic Fermented Beverages 2 August 2022 FOOD Advertisement Advertisement From being gut-friendly and improving digestion to keeping you hydrated and healthy, there are a number of reasons why fermented beverages are finding favour with people all across the world. More and more people are drinking and making non-alcoholic beverages as it offers a host of benefits. Homebrewing, which is simply making beer or wine on a personal and small-scale level, is a hobby and a profession for many. The reason is, that it is high on flavour, low on alcohol, and does not require any fancy equipment. The process of fermenting and making probiotic drinks is very easy, anyone can do it. Homebrewing has become a great hobby and experiment that people are taking up in recent days. The basic idea is to brew a taste test batch of your favourite beverage at your home, be it Kombucha, Tepache, Ginger Beer, Red Table Wine, among a wide variety of options. It can be intimidating at first, but can be very rewarding, and cheap! All you really need is a big vessel, something fermentable, and some yeast. “There are a variety of beverages you can brew and once you get the basics down, it can be simple to add your own unique twist to a recipe.” A great way to start is by brewing a Hard Cider. The easiest method is crushing the juice from a batch of apples, putting it in a jug, and letting it ferment in a dark place for one to three weeks. Apple skins contain various natural yeasts, which end up in the apple juice when the fruit is pressed, but you can choose to add cider yeast which is great for fermentation. You can also add sugar and spices to enhance the taste. Another brewer’s favourite is the Kombucha, which is a great alternative to alcoholic beverages. It is naturally packed with probiotics and is made with water, tea, sugar, bacteria, and yeast. It starts out as a sugary tea, which is then fermented with the help of a SCOBY, an acronym for ‘Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast.’ It is refreshing, fizzy, slightly sour, and low in calories and sugar. You can ferment Kombucha for seven to ten days in a mason jar and close it shut with a tightly woven cloth and lid. Tepache is a fizzy fermented drink made from just pineapple skin, sugar, cinnamon, and water. Its taste can range from cider-like and sweet to yeasty like beer. The process is simple: add pineapple peels to a large jar, add sugar and cinnamon and drown them in water until the peels come to the surface of the jar. Let it ferment for one to three days. The longer it ferments, the less sweet and more yeast-flavoured it will become. You will know the tepache has fermented when you see many small bubbles on top. Refrigerate and enjoy your drink! A batch of Kombucha (left) and Tepache (right) kept for fermentation A sparking probiotic beverage that is very easy to make, Ginger Beer is a traditional remedy for nausea and digestion problems and is good for the throat. You will need to make a powerful fermented mixture, Ginger Bug to make this drink. The wild yeast or ginger bug is made by adding water, sugar, and finely chopped ginger to a glass container and letting it sit for twenty-four hours after stirring. Take the next two-three days to add the same amount of ginger and sugar every twenty-four hours until it becomes fizzy. Strain it and add lemon juice. Let it sit at room temperature for three to six days until it gets fizzy. Once they’ve reached that point, you can refrigerate them; but make sure you’re opening the top and burping them once a day. Ginger Beer and Red Table Wine are said to be great for health having healing properties To make a batch of Red Table Wine, add one cup of sugar into a bottle of purple grape juice, add a packet of wine yeast, pop in an airlock, and come back in a few weeks. Alternatively, you can add around three quarts of the juice to a glass jar, before adding six cups of sugar and a pack of yeast. With these amazing and easy-to-make beverages, you can start homebrewing some of your own in no time. It’s a healthy hobby and is definitely a skill that comes over a period of time. Ultimately, it will be worth all the time and effort. Moreover, it is the best way to take part in an age old tradition that stretches all the way back to the Neolithic! #Homebrewing #Fermentation #Probiotic #Kombucha #SCOBY #Tepache SEARCH How was Chocolate Born FOOD Virgin Territory: These non-alcoholic thirst quenchers are mixologist approved FOOD Tasting the sunny side of Christmas: Christmas Cocktails FOOD 5 Destinations You Must Head to Taste Wine in India FOOD Breakfast – Don’t miss!
