  • Narrating Stories With Fabric: Rick Roy’s Masterful Ability To Influence An Era Of Fashion

by Akshay T S Narrating Stories With Fabric: Rick Roy’s Masterful Ability To Influence An Era Of Fashion 7 July 2023 FASHION Advertisement With his creative flair and impeccable attention to detail, the costume designer Rick Roy brings characters to life through the power of wardrobe. Steeped in a world of imagination and boundless creativity, the costume designer is a masterful storyteller in his own right. He has a unique ability of translating the essence of a character into visual form, crafting costumes that not only enhance the narrative but also become an integral part of the storytelling process. Each stitch, fabric choice, and accessory speak volumes, reflects the nuances of personality, era, and emotion. He is a master collaborator, working closely with directors, actors, and production teams to bring their collective vision to life. He has worked with a variety of Bollywood films where his costume designing ability has melded his own artistic instincts with the broader creative vision of the production. When asked about why he chose costume designing as a career, he inferred that he was always an artistic person with an eye for aesthetics and colors. He had never shown much interest in traditional studies and he was glad to have found the support of his parents since they were also pretty much inclined towards art. He further talks about what usually goes on inside his mind, revealing that insanity paves way to the creation of art. His head is usually brimming with multitudes of ideas and he finds it hard to fixate on one specific idea for a design. As a costume designer, he loves creating different looks for different characters in a variety of films and that way he is able to channel these ideas into multiple areas. Diving into the topic of fashion critiques with the question of which Indian fashion critique, in his opinion, does their job well, he takes a moment before revealing his answer. He believes that there is a lot of fashion know-how that goes behind fashion critiquing and it serves more than just the purpose of entertainment. There is more to fashion critiquing than just criticization and he is slowly learning to master it on his own. So, there is no specific fashion critique that comes to his mind yet. When asked about who his favourite fashion designer is, he immediately expresses his admiration for the international designer John Galliano. Other designers whom he really looks up to are Alexander McQueen, Manish Arora, Tarun Wendell, Abu Sandeep, Rohit Bal, Jivalaya Sabya, and Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna. He finds their individual voice and authentic, trend-setting viewpoint to be very inspiring. His personal sense of style can be described as a mix of the eccentric rock grunge, showy disco colours yet something that brags a comfortable fit. He believes he is a maximalist with a bit of ‘extra’ in all of his looks, but he further clarifies how careful and economical he is with his purchases so that his every buy can be utilised in the best way possible. Another candid question of what place has he learnt the most about fashion from, he reveals that a lot of the major learnings of his career has come from people more than the place itself. They have taught him more than just the technicalities of fashion and one of the people whom he credits the most is one of his co-workers Malaika. He elaborates more on the workings of the fashion industry when a particularly insightful question about what needs to be changed I the fashion industry is asked. He majorly talked about trends, iterating that people need to stop following trends and instead, start creating them. There is an individual point of view that needs to be developed. One of the major inputs in the Indian fashion industry comes from wedding couture and a lot of designers have followed through with the same genre, limiting the Indian fashion industry to that specific genre mainly. He enunciates how he finds inspiration in people when asked the question of who or what inspires him the most. Most of his designs are for the characters on screen and hence, they also serve as the source of inspiration of him. He carefully understands the nuances of a character and works upon their wardrobe instead of creating a look that pleases his personal tastes. He further tells us about his favourite project till date which was one of the recent Bollywood films called ‘Sarvagunn Sampann’ that he has worked on. It was one of his best experiences as it gave him a lot of creative freedom and seamless support from the director and the producer of the film. There was a lot of trust involved in the process and he truly felt at home as he worked upon this exciting project. Perhaps this is what made it one of his favourite projects till date. With his undeniable talent and passion, Rick Roy enhances and illuminates the world of storytelling, infusing it with an enchanting visual tapestry that allows us to truly believe in the magic of the characters we encounter. His artistry and love for fashion is a true reminder of the profound impact costume has in shaping our perception and connection with the stories we all hold so dear. • The House of Chanel: History

by Aparajita Jaiswal The House of Chanel: History 1 May 2021 FASHION Advertisement Coco Chanel, the artistic genius of a million dollar empire, who was born by the name of Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, was a French fashion designer who ruled over Parisian haute couture for almost six decades. Her elegantly casual designs inspired women of fashion to abandon the complicated, uncomfortable clothes like petticoats and corsets that were prevalent in 19th-century dress code. Among her ever so classy innovations were the Chanel suit, the quilted purse, costume jewelry, and the “little black dress”. Although the cosmetics and perfume wing of the French fashion house began many years ago with a little fragrance called No5. It started life back in 1921 when Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was already reigning over the Paris fashion world. Everyday is a fashion show, the world is our runway Coco Chanel Chanel was born into poverty in the French countryside. After a brief stint as a shop girl, Chanel worked for a few years as a café singer. She later, with financial assistance from Arthur Capel, opened a tiny millinery shop in Deauville, France, where she also sold simple sportswear, such as jersey sweaters. Within the span of mere five years, her use of jersey’s fabric to create a poor girl look had attracted the attention of influential wealthy women seeking relief from the prevalent corseted styles. Faithful to her belief that “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury,” Chanel’s designs stressed simplicity and comfort and revolutionized the fashion industry, changing uncomfortable corsets to leisure suits. Chanel enlisted a lot of financial help from various companies and wealthy gentlemen. The magnificent empire of Chanel no. 5 was first supported financially with the help of Ernst Beaux and introduced to the world in 1921 for the very first time. Ernst Beaux was one of the most-talented perfume creators in France. It is said that from the various samples procured by Ernst Beaux, Chanel chose the fifth sample, giving the perfume its official name. It was a combination of jasmine and several other floral scents that was more complex and mysterious than the single-scented perfumes then on the market. Chanel was the first major fashion designer to introduce a perfume and that she replaced the typical perfume packaging with a simple and sleek bottle also added to the scent’s success. She partnered with businessmen Théophile Bader of the Galeries Lafayette department store and Pierre Wertheimer of the Bourjois cosmetics company, who both agreed to help her produce more of her fragrance and to market it in exchange for a share of the profits. After signing a contract wherein she received only 10 percent of the royalties, Chanel enacted a series of lawsuits in the ensuing decades to regain control of her signature fragrance. Although she was never able to renegotiate the terms of her contract to increase her royalties, Chanel nonetheless made a considerable profit from the perfume. By the late 1920s the Chanel industries were reportedly worth millions and employed more than 2,000 people, not only in her couture house but also in a perfume laboratory, a textile mill, and a jewelry workshop. At the same time, Chanel started to expand and go global launching a cosmetics line in 1924 and a range of skincare products in 1929. Chanel closed her couture house in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II. Her associations with a German diplomat during the Nazi occupation tainted her reputation, and she did not return to fashion until 1954. That year she introduced her highly copied suit design: a collarless, braid-trimmed cardigan jacket with a graceful skirt. She also introduced bell-bottomed pants and other innovations while always retaining a clean classic look. In the 50s, Chanel No5 really was the perfume to be smelt in. In a 1954 interview, Marilyn Monroe famously answered the question “What do you wear to bed?” with the line “Just a few drops of No5”. After her death in 1971, Chanel’s couture house was led by a series of different designers, stabilizing the situation in 1983 when Karl Lagerfeld became chief designer. The popularity of the perfume continued to grow but this wasn’t necessarily a good thing. In the 1970s it was decided that No5 had lost its air of exclusivity so it was reinvented and made less widely available. Huge advertising campaigns were adopted using big name directors and big name stars; a Chanel tradition that lives on to this day. Chanel’s shrewd understanding of women’s fashion needs, her enterprising ambition, and the romantic aspects of her life, her rise from rags to riches and her sensational love affairs, continued to inspire numerous biographical books, films, and plays, including the 1970 Broadway musical Coco starring Katharine Hepburn. Chanel Today Today Chanel is 87 years old and worth $100 Million. Chanel is owned by by Alain Wertheimer and Gérard Wertheimer, grandsons of Pierre Wertheimer, who was an early business partner of the couturière Coco Chanel. Chanel focuses exclusively on women’s high fashion and ready-to-wear clothes, luxury goods, and accessories. Chanel has a huge range of fancily-priced makeup with seasonal launches and limited edition collections that come thick and fast. In more recent years, something strange happens when Chanel launch a new shade. People get a bit giddy, waiting lists are formed and cheap copycats are produced. It is one of the top luxury brands, a classic understanding of from rags to riches and a desire of every woman across the globe. Overtime they have become exclusive, desired and rare which are the reasons why Chanel’s items are both popular and expensive. #Jasmine #Chanelno5 #Fashionindustry #Fashiondesigner #Corsets #Fashion #InèsdelaFressange #HouseofChanel #Broadwaymusical #Paris #Chanelscouturehouse #Perfume #WorldWarII #Chanel #Nazi #Littleblackdress #KatharineHepburn #Dress #France #KarlLagerfeld #French #Hautecouture #Petticoats #Jewelry #Scent #ErnstBeaux #CocoChanel SEARCH The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom FASHION Fashion In The 19th Century FASHION Colour Psychology in Fashion: Explained FASHION The Influence Of Kanye West On Fashion FASHION K-Pop Fashion And Its Impact On Global Wardrobe FASHION POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Dubai Fashion Week Day Five: Emerging Talents, Cultural Heritage, And Global Fashion Dialogues 14 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Marina Ignjat: A Journey Through Style And Travel 13 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Anaya Collection Unveils "Gaudí’s Reverie" At Dubai Fashion Week: A Fusion Of Love, Technique, And Playful Elegance 11 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Hebajasmi Unveils Captivating New Collection For SS25: A Masterpiece Of Art And Fashion 10 September 2024 FASHION RELATED POSTS

by Meenal Chand Eco-friendly clothing is the need of the hour 1 December 2020 FASHION Advertisement With the adverse chaotic outburst of the nature we are witnessing and the trendy ‘local for vocal’, there’s no harm or I must say there’s more smartness in switching to sustainability. One thing that is much needed and should be updated is the fashion and clothing and if it’s in the good side without putting burden on the environment we live in what could be better than that? Advocating sustainable fashion, I must say clothing made from cotton ,jute etc would not only be eco friendly but it could give a big boost to the economy as well if one finds a way to make it more reasonable and classy. Infact, bigger brands have already started working on that and it’s more of a movement and process fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. Sustainable fashion concerns more than just addressing fashion textiles or products. It comprises addressing the whole system of fashion. • Love child of Punk and Scene: Grunge

by Neha Pande Love child of Punk and Scene: Grunge 27 July 2020 FASHION Advertisement If Punk fashion is an ‘anti fashion’ stance or movement then Grunge can be seen as a ‘non fashion’ statement or movement away from the typical sense of fashion set by fashion agencies or designers. Grunge is a love child of Punk and Scene which was also inspired by the comfortable fashion sense of the Hippie era. It was inspired by the dark theme of Punk with the nonchalant and loose fashion of the Hippie, i.e. a comfortable, uncoordinated look with the edgy style of Scene added to it which makes it look appealing. From vintage band tee shirts, flannels, oversized wool Pendletons to chunky Dr. Marten’s combat boots, high-waist jeans or comfortable cargo pants are some of the Grunge essentials. Grunge is an alternative rock music style featuring electric guitars and dragging lyrics. Grunge fashion is a part of grunge music genre and sub culture which started in mid 1980s Seattle and reached its popularity in early 2000s. This fashion is iconic with its durability and timeless thrifting with a vintage style. Celebrities like Kurt Cobain, the singer-guitarist of Nirvana used to wear an oversized striped sweater, ripped jeans, a pair of converse and unkempt hair which influenced grunge fashion. “Grunge has changed over time; flannels and Dr. Martens which were worn as “non fashion” statements have changed into a movement; a fashion statement in itself.” Designers like Marc Jacobs brought grunge to a luxury platform in 1993. He was inspired by his creative director of women’s design at Perry Ellis, debuting a whole spring collection inspired by grunge. A French brand which you all know as Louis Vuitton joined in the grunge fashion statement in 1997. Yet the fashion statement was called “ghastly” and only took off in the 2000s. It soon after became mainstream and made its way to the runways. Soon grunge trademarks like heavy layering, flannels, vintage band tees, Dr. Martens, oversized slouchy sweaters and many more were seen everywhere. Even today grunge fashion is alive but with some alterations and enhancements to aid the modern fashion. This has given birth to a whole new sub-genre of grunge aesthetic i.e. soft grunge, pastel grunge, cute grunge, Indie grunge and vintage grunge. The basic grunge of the 90s was dark and heavily inspired by scene and punk rock while these new genres were inspired by the various aesthetic needs of modern fashion. Grunge as a fashion statement has evolved and now it just doesn’t include dark but has some lighter shades added to its sub genres. It no longer contains just vintage band tees, ripped jeans, oversized sweaters or combat boots but has accommodated skirts, dresses, shorts, crop tops, cargo pants etc. with the basic grunge aesthetics. It’s a medley, mix and match, which is what fashion is. #GrungePunkFashionStatementFashionstatementStyleDesign SEARCH The Rich Heritage of Indian Handloom FASHION Fashion In The 19th Century FASHION Colour Psychology in Fashion: Explained FASHION The Influence Of Kanye West On Fashion FASHION K-Pop Fashion And Its Impact On Global Wardrobe FASHION POPULAR POSTS Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement By Anushka Sharma Dubai Fashion Week Day Five: Emerging Talents, Cultural Heritage, And Global Fashion Dialogues 14 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Marina Ignjat: A Journey Through Style And Travel 13 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Anaya Collection Unveils "Gaudí’s Reverie" At Dubai Fashion Week: A Fusion Of Love, Technique, And Playful Elegance 11 September 2024 FASHION By Anushka Sharma Hebajasmi Unveils Captivating New Collection For SS25: A Masterpiece Of Art And Fashion 10 September 2024 FASHION RELATED POSTS

This quote shows the heavy responsibility placed on a film director, and these are severe words for anyone to fulfill. Enter Anil Singh Chandel, an Indian actor, producer, and director best known for his debut film “Mid Day Meal”. Anil Singh was born on the 10 th of December 1991 in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, where he spent his childhood till he left for Raigarh for further studies; after his studies, Chandel initially started working at companies such as Reliance Telecom and Fullerton India. • Sandeepa Dhar: On Being Versatile and Learning from Mistakes

by JoNa Sandeepa Dhar: On Being Versatile and Learning from Mistakes 11 December 2022 COVER STORIES Advertisement Sandeepa Dhar from Kashmir made her debut into Bollywood with the movie Isi Life Mein in 2010, from then it has been an upward journey for her. She has starred in multiple hit movies and critically acclaimed web series such as Abhay and Mai: A Mother’s Rage. Dhar has been nominated for the Filmfare Best Debut Actress, Star Screen Award for Most Promising Newcomer – female and the Stardust Award for Superstar of Tomorrow – Female. She opens up to us about the challenges she faced in the industry, her learning experiences in the shooting spots, her co-stars and her philosophy when it comes to life and work. The Pandemic has taught her not to plan things far ahead, she’s more conscious of the changes in the Bollywood industry and is ready to take one step at a time. She’s not in a hurry to the top. It is the process that appeals to her. “ Personal growth as an actor and as an individual is the most important for me. I think that's where I see myself going, I see myself evolving, changing, getting better and better with time.” Sandeepa Dhar is working on a new project, meanwhile she spoke to us about working on the sets of Kaagaz with the legendary actors Salman Khan, Pankaj Tripathi and Director Satish Kaushik. She shares a special relationship with Salman Khan, as she had already worked with him; and Tripathi according to her, is ‘an amazing and smashing human being.’ She quoted an incident where Kaushik came to her with a song and told her that it was about women empowerment, and that he would never shoot an item song or show women in a poor light. ‘It was reassuring and refreshing to see him talk like that,’ she said. “It was a wonderful experience working on Kaagaz, I'm extremely lucky that I get to work with such an amazing set of creative minds who've been in the industry for a really long time, who are so experienced, and at the top of the game. Ihope I get to work with them over and over again. Fingers crossed.” When asked about her experience so far in Bollywood, Dhar said that it is like a rollercoaster ride, having it’s ups and downs. She is extremely grateful to have worked in diverse roles, with multiple stars and franchises like Netflix and Hotstar. She is also ready to fight for and hope for more bigger, stronger roles and recognition. Looking forward to many more exciting opportunities, Dhar remains optimistic. “ …I feel like I'm also very grateful, because I have got an opportunity to work with some amazing set of people from Salman to Sajid Nadiadwala to Tiger to Kriti and Rajshri. Even with the web, I have gotten the opportunity to work with some brilliantly talented people; platforms from Netflix to Hotstar, the best in the game. I think it's been an interesting journey and I'm only very excited to see where it goes henceforth. Because I don't know myself where it leads me to, I don’t know how much I'm going to grow and evolve. No matter what, I'm really, really looking forward to the opportunities that I get henceforth and to the choices that I make ahead.” Working with Atul Mongia for the web series Mai has been a dream come true for Sandeepa Dhar. The series was produced by Clean Slate Filmz owned by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma. It was a critical and commercial success, and it impacted her personally and professionally as well says Dhar. She goes on to talk about her views on personal development and how she focuses on being a better person and artist, never comparing herself to anyone but herself. She strongly believe in personal growth, and looks forward to being a better version of her self both on and off screen. ‘People who compare their lives to others’ are quite narrow minded, as everyone’s journey is different,’ she adds. “. I feel like anyway, with the kind of lifestyles that we all have, we all need to look inward and work on our own selves, that's the only way that we can keep a straight head in this crazy world. Because, social media and people can play with your head and I think at this point, the only thing that can save you is your own self and knowing who you are and working on it. I think for me that is what is the most important.” For a final question, we asked her about the obstacles she has faced and her journey so far. She replied that being an outsider had been her first obstacle; she knew no one in the industry and had to work hard to land roles, to reach the relevant people. Since she had no one to guide her during her earlier days, everything was of ‘trial and error,’ method for her. She had to learn from her mistakes, sometimes she erred three four times, before learning her lesson. She also spoke about the ‘perception’ that people have about actors, which stereotypes them and thereby denying them of certain roles. This fight against people’s perception of her is a constant battle she says. “In this industry, the stereotyping is immense to an extent it’s quite ridiculous in a way because isn't it stupid that as an actor, you're putting people in boxes, according to the way they look. But as an actor, I should mould myself physically and emotionally as per the character. That is my job, right? I'm supposed to play a different character irrespective of what I look like, but the industry forces you to only play roles, which kind of suffice to what you look like physically. So, if I am, for example, fair and modern and good looking then, according to them, I would only fit in roles wherein the character is rich and from an affluent family or speaks English. I am honestly quite fed up with people thinking like that. I think there is that obstacle that I'm constantly fighting hence, if you look at my filmography, I'm always playing roles wherein the character is quite the opposite of what I am in person.” We ended the interview with a positive vibe, with Sandeepa Dhar asking the audience and readers to look forward to her movies and series, not because she is in them but because they’re worth watching. We are indeed looking forward to your next project Sandeepa Dhar! Wishing you all luck and success! • Unraveling The Luxurious Tapestry: A Journey Through The History Of Cashmere

By Anushka Sharma Unraveling The Luxurious Tapestry: A Journey Through The History Of Cashmere 27 February 2024 FASHION Advertisement Nestled high in the Himalayan mountains, there exists a fabric so exquisite, so revered, that it has adorned royalty and captivated fashionistas for centuries. This fabric is none other than cashmere, a material synonymous with luxury, elegance, and unparalleled softness. But what is the story behind this remarkable fiber? Let us embark on a journey through time to uncover the rich history of cashmere. The tale of cashmere goes back to the ancient lands of Kashmir, a region known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. It was here, over a thousand years ago, that the indigenous Kashmiri goats roamed the rugged terrain, their fine undercoat protecting them from the harsh mountain winters. The local artisans discovered the secret hidden within this fleece, and thus, the art of cashmere weaving was born. Intrigued by the remarkable properties of cashmere, merchants from distant lands began to trade for this precious commodity, transporting it along the ancient Silk Road to destinations as far-reaching as Europe and the Middle East. By the 14th century, cashmere had become a coveted luxury, sought after by nobility and aristocracy across the globe. During the Renaissance period, cashmere reached new heights of popularity as the European royalty graced in sumptuous cashmere shawls, often intricately embroidered with elaborate designs. These shawls became symbols of wealth and status, and were considered to be prized possessions which were passed down through generations as cherished heirlooms. The fascination with cashmere continued to flourish into the 19th century, spurred on by the romanticism of the Orientalist movement. European artists and writers depicted the exotic allure of the East, further fueling the demand for all things Kashmiri, including the coveted cashmere shawls. However, as the Industrial Revolution swept across Europe, the production of cashmere underwent a significant transformation. Advancements in technology enabled mass production, making cashmere more accessible to the burgeoning middle class. Yet, despite the increased availability, the allure of authentic, handcrafted Kashmiri cashmere remained unmatched. In the 20th century, cashmere experienced a resurgence in popularity, becoming a staple in high-end fashion houses and designer collections. Celebrities and trendsetters alike coveted the luxurious feel and timeless elegance of cashmere garments, further cementing its status as a symbol of sophistication and refinement. Today, the legacy of cashmere endures, with artisans in Kashmir continuing to uphold centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship and quality. While modern techniques have streamlined production, the essence of true cashmere remains unchanged – a testament to the enduring appeal of this remarkable fiber. Yet, the story of cashmere is not without its challenges. Environmental concerns and ethical considerations surrounding the treatment of cashmere goats have prompted calls for sustainable practices within the industry. As consumers become increasingly conscious of the origins of their garments, there is a growing demand for transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain. Despite these challenges, the allure of cashmere persists, transcending time and trends. Whether draped over the shoulders of royalty or adorning the shelves of luxury boutiques, cashmere continues to captivate and inspire, weaving a timeless tale of luxury, tradition, and enduring beauty. So, the next time you wrap yourself in the soft embrace of a cashmere sweater, take a moment to appreciate the centuries of history and craftsmanship that have gone into creating this truly remarkable fabric.
