Meditation is a technique used to develop awareness of the present moment. Practising meditation helps in reducing stress, aggression, increasing one's focus, enhancing one's mood and regulating one's emotions.

The common types of meditation are:
1. Mindfulness Meditation
This originated from Buddhist teachings. In this one observes thoughts as they pass through the mind.
2. Spiritual Meditation
It is used in all religions and spiritual traditions.This can be practised in the place of worship and helps one in making a deeper connection with a spiritual force.
3. Focused Meditation
It involves concentration using any of the five senses like counting beads, listening to any sound, staring at any object or counting breaths. It helps in sharpening one's focus.
4. Movement Meditation
This helps one in making a deeper connection with the body and can involve engaging in any kind of activity like walking or gardening.
5. Mantra Meditation
In this , one repeats a word or phrase to clear the mind. For example , chanting 'om'.
6. Progressive Relaxation
In this one slowly tightens and relaxes one's muscles.It helps in relieving stress.
7. Visualisation Meditation
In this, one imagines positive images, scenes or figures. It helps in enhancing one's mood.
